its true that hte fx-57 is the best for gaming out there, but 5fps doesnt do justice. the x2 4800+ is the far smarter choice and the more superior processor in all fields. dual-core's the future.
QFT.

For current games, the fastest single cores are faster than the duals, but you need to be at max resolution before it really matters.

For video editing, dual usually wins. Some apps are not threaded well, so no gain. But, the newer high-end and now some of the consumer editors are threaded.

You can oc a X2 to FX-57 Speed
You cant open up your FX-57 and add new core .

So X2 4800 best of both worlds .

that is quite the bold statement, this is not always possible and is by all means not average, and when you can hit this speed (2.8Ghz) you need some serious voltage and cooling. I can get mine to 2.8 on 1.62v which I have done prime stable for 40min until I stopped it, but this equals a max load temp in excess of 65 degrees which is a HELL NO CAPTAIN .. i am contemplating whether to put it on water or maybe even a TEC :D so to get a stable nicely chilled 2.8Ghz, which in my case would be a stable cool 1Ghz overclock.. :D

X2 4800 all the way... It performs very well... I get pretty amazing scores on 3DMark05 and on Aquamark3... Every game I have tried to play; has ran without a flicker at even 1600x1200 resolution... But.... I'm also running 2 video cards in SLI mode... You get that extra edge when you run other applications behind your ongoing games with the X2.

In the long run the second core will give more value than an extra 400 MHz on a single core. Multitasking will be smoother. Within the next few years games (and other apps) are going to become more optimized to make use of multiple cores and those with single cores will be left in the dust. There's a good reason the majority of posts in this thread are recommending the top of the line dual core option.

the X2... 2nd core has alot bigger impact then a 400 mhz increase. and with the new nvidia drivers optimized for dual cores, the 4800+ even beats the fx57 in quake 4 ( atleast in that one review it did :))

future games/applications will be multithreaded. even so, you can always run more processes on your other core while gaming with the first one. and video editing/encoding is generally multithreaded already i belive, so the 4800 will be what? 60% faster or something?

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ hands down.

For multitasking, speed, 2x1, cheaper, and future programs and games will most likely run better on dual-core.

Athlon 64 X2 4800+ can be oc to FX 57 speeds
The FX 57 cant grow another core.
