Hello all,

I have noticed that almost everyone who is OCing their machines is using an AMD chip vs an Intel. Why is this? What am I missing?

Thanks.

Where have you been ??? Trust me Intel Over Clocking is alive and well and much easier then cutting and hacking on your processor.

Intel overclocking is easier, but Intel CPU's cost more. AMD will overclock just as well if not better than any Intel CPU with a little more work.

And a complete warranty void I will add. Intel has no way to knowing that there processor has been overclocked. The hot AMD CPU to buy right now is the 1.2 Thunderbird if your going AMD its almost garranteed to be unlocked.

sure AMD is cheeper than Intel, but when you get all your components "amd approved", there wont be much of a difference in price.

BS...! Good componets are what it takes no matter AMD or Intel... If your gonna OC and take it to the max cheap crap dont cut it...! (sometimes you get lucky but more often not...) As a former Intel die hard (P3 700e @1Ghz 1.65 yes default voltage) my new "rig" wipes the floor with it...

Go for the gusto...! Go AMD!!! (I did save some of my Intel stuff for the kids...) ;)

Whipes the floor thats a little over statement there..... What your not getting is he wants Dual processor. And if he really want to go for the Gusto get a P-4 (no dual though). I'm typing at 1.71 ghz right now and others on this forum are at 1.83 and 1.875. So if were going to talk gusto lets really talk gusto LOL !! ;)

not trying to encourage a flame war, but how much did you pay for that 1.71 ghz NOS440. I have used both systems and I currently like what amd has to offer. It is all personal preference, so nobody knows whats best for you except for you.

Well Garet, I'm currently overclocking an intel based system. But my next system will most likely be an AMD based system. Mainly because of the costs of intel processors. If a P4 was actually faster than athlon in all benchmarks instead of just a few I would probably buy a p4, but it's definately not. Maybe the next version of the p4 would be faster. It's kind of hard to justify paying twice the price for a p4 when it's not the fastest.

Also another reason besides price that more people are going with intel is currently the p3's cores are really limited to 1ghz or maybe 1.1ghz. While amd chips there are aircooled 1.4ghz systems.

375.00 with 128 megs of Rdram and sold them for 125.00 and bought 2 128s for 240.00 on flea bay. So I got mine cheap. I know others that have done the same as me. The deals are out there you just have to search them out.

NOS440,
Thats a good buy you got there, but the point I was trying to make is that most amd systems cost less, and the main point is that it's all personal preference. I'm glad your happy with your system, and pretty much no matter what anybody here decides to do, it should make them happy.

P4 is a joke of a chip. I will stick w/ Tbird OverClocking. AMD now leads the way in PC Innovation.

Intel has not made a good chipset since the BX. They can only follow now.

Trying to start a war ?? We aren't bashing the Thunderbird here were just stating are opinions on what the guy asked. lets not turn this into another AMD versus Intel flame war.

Sorry that just my opinion about Intel. Over priced and poor preformance. I really like the BS on NetBrust in the P4.

Yes....
I also used a 1.2ghz@1.596ghz Tbird on a Asus A7M266.

I like the Tbird better. Wish it was mine.

Well exactly what kind of cooling was involved in a 1596 mhz Thunderbird. Everyone running P-4s are using $9-$20 Air coolers.

The P4 I play around with is a 1.5ghz on a ASUS P4T, 256megs Memory, 30gig WD, Geforce2 Pro runnig Win2K Pro Sp1.

My Friends bad @$$ Tbird cooling is a air cooled copper heatsink, he did mount some extra fans in the case.

O the P4 does crash in quake3 rarely but it does. I have yet to see the Tbird crash..

Sounds like who ever has the P-4 doesn't have something right for it to crash. I can run mine 24/7 play whatever I want. I have even ran Prime95, Passmark Burn in test and a real intensive 3d screen saver all at once overnight for 3 nights in a row with it clocked at 1.71 ghz with my High Dollar $9 cooler and have never crashed this thing and I mean never.

I did not build the P4, I believe the problem is driver related not hardware.

This summer I build my dual Tbird systems. I can't wait!!!
