AMD Vega builders thread - rx 64 & rx 56

Okay so I can finally confirm that I've fixed the trouble I was having with the black Vega... definitely a power issue. I'm glad because I missed gaming on this Ryzen 7 machine. I should have inspected the power supply sooner but at least it's all set now.
 
I don't think the unit itself was ever faulty, but over time that single cable just got too stressed from the heavy power draw and eventually deteriorated enough, over the course of a few months, that it failed when Vega wanted to pull too much power.

I mean it makes perfect sense... card worked perfect for quite awhile but then all of a sudden cut out mid-game. Then, no drivers I installed prevented the card (or driver) from crashing. Tried the card elsewhere and it seemed fine and then I pulled my hair out trying to figure out what software was causing it, which there was none. Finally, I put the OS drive aside and installed Windows on a new SSD and when that didn't work it was time to pull her apart and see wth was going on. I'm not crazy about the machine being down for a few weeks but a new power supply is a small price to pay to get it back up. I could probably have used the original after removing and terminating the once socket but I figured I'd play it safe.

So, I suppose that I will urge anyone with a 64 that they should run two separate cables to each 8-pin connector. The daisy-chaining worked initially but there's no denying that I eventually cooked that cable end.

Must defiantly run two separate cables!
 
My EVGA P2 (750W) has nothing but 8+6 connectors, so I was sort of forced to use a separate cable. Guess I could use an adapter but ehhhh no thanks. Those cables are limited for multiple reasons.
 
Depends on the card though, some you can get away with whatever cables you can spare and implement adapters if you absolutely need to; it will be just fine. Others like the Vega 64, which causes my lights to flicker during gaming if it's not on my dedicated computing power circuit, appreciate the separate runs. I have a 850W EVGA powering a pair of GTX 980 (one's a KP with 2x8pin + 1 6pin) and I used nearly every cable the PSU shipped with. I've yet to have issues with that setup but that's a very good power supply too.
 
So quick question to the Vega FE owners. I noticed that AMD released the new 18.1.1 driver. Do we have to wait for AMD to update the Pro driver before we can update Vega FE? Or can we install 18.1.1? If we can't, will the AMD software notify me when there is a new Pro driver version I can update to? Thanks!

We gotta wait. I did a search for driver updates from the gaming driver, and nothing was available.
 
Looks like the December Pro driver came out about a week after the RX Vega driver. Hopefully that holds true for this month as well...

Well, I know the pro drivers were supposed to drop every quarter. I hope we don't have to wait that long for gaming updates.
 
local PC repair shop had a Vega 56 on display with a price tag of 800 bucks... it's the only one I've seen in-store.

same store, 1080ti... $789.00

Crazy times we live in. I have a Ryzen system and have always been an AMD fan, but I struggled with paying $750 for the Vega FE for a while. I was pretty much driven to it since I have a freesync monitor and nothing comparable is offered with Gsync. Otherwise I would have gotten a 1080ti in a hearbeat over the Vega FE...
 
Also, I just sold my old Sapphire R9 Fury Nitro on Ebay for just under $500. ~$200 more than I paid for it. So netting everything out I only paid ~$50 more for the Vega FE than I would have paid for the Vega RX 64 at their actual MSRP of $499.

Whoa! Concerning.

I've got a G4560 rig in a Z170 ATX board, with an EVGA 600B (Bronze 600W ATX PSU), powering BOTH an RX 460 4GB (6-pin) AND a RX 570 8GB "Gaming X" (8-pin). And I did smell something kind of "hot" lately. Better check it.

Well, another thing is . . . if all you're doing is switching to gamer mode, then I think AMD can just slot in a new gaming driver without actually updating the Pro driver at all.
 
Apparently Vega FE drivers don't like Windows Update updating your Win10 version to a new build.

I'm a Win10 Insider, so I get new builds pretty frequently in the fast ring. I've already gone through this one. The first time, it defaulted to Pro mode and only allowed me to switch to 17.9.1 gaming driver (was on 17.12.x before), which crashed and forced a reboot. After rebooting, it reverted to Pro mode, and then for some miraculous reason it allowed a switch to 17.21.x (but NOT 17.9.1), which worked. Thank goodness.

Yesterday I updated to 17083 which caused the same problem, but switching driver mode b0rked the entire driver install every time I did it, no matter how closely I followed instructions posted earlier in this thread.

I tried running the AMD driver cleanup utility, but that messed up something on my system preventing me from installing the Radeon Pro display drivers at all

So I ran DDU, and that fixed things allowing driver installation, BUT it apparently killed some .dll files in Windows/System32 related to the Qt framework that Radeon Pro Settings needs for base functionality (wtf). So now I need to find out how to get QtWebEngine.dll (NOT QtWebEngineCore.dll or anything similar) back on my system. For now at least the driver is working, even if I can't switch driver modes right now.

Anyone got a copy of that file handy? Or know how I can restore it?

edit: got the file, but it does not stop Radeon Settings from crashing. Not sure where to go from here. Reinstalling the entire driver package from scratch isn't fixing the problem either.

Not yet. Right now I have a fragile peace with my machine: the Pro driver is working, but Radeon Pro Settings is not, so it's still usable . . . I just can't switch to the Gamer drivers for proper voltage/fan control to get myself back into mining shape and get some fps that I'm losing letting the GPU run with (admittedly bad, wtf were you thinking AMD) default behavior. It's annoying, but not crippling.

But yeah I could roll back to the previous Insider build, since I have not deleted it yet. Downside is that the Vega FE driver stack does not play along well with Win10 OS version upgrades, so I imagine that a rollback might put me back at square one: working Pro drivers and Radeon Pro Settings, but b0rked driver mode switching. If I switch and get corrupt drivers again, I'll have to uninstall and go through the same hassle that (apparently) nuked some Qt components on my machine somewhere, preventing Radeon Pro Settings from working at all.

I would rather diagnose and solve the problem I have now so that I do not repeat the same mistakes as before.
 
I am happy to report that I have (apparently) solved my problem.

All I had to do was uninstall the driver via Device Manager (again), uninstall all driver components via the AMD Software application in Apps & Features (again), undo my overclock, and reinstall. Then installing the Pro driver completed without any missing .dll files or other components of Radeon Pro Software, and I was able to redownload the gaming 17.12.2 driver, reboot, switch, reboot, and go.

So my OC may have been a bit unstable.

Sadly the fact remains that OS updates will force you into Pro mode, and make switching back to gaming mode contentious, even without an unstable OC.
 
Wow. I am super glad I pulled the trigger on that Vega FE card for $750. I have been keeping an eye on 'now in stock' and regular RX Vega cards are selling out in minutes at $1,100+. Crazy. FE on Newegg is back to $950 last time I checked. Been very happy with the FE so far. A little louder fan than I hoped for but I am still playing around in Wattman to find a good balance of performance and fan noise.

Ditto! I feel like I stole the Vega FE for $750 after seeing the price shoot up that high!
