Question is...now that intel chipsets favor ATi and AMD chipsets will likely also favor ATi...will nVidia be left out in the cold, or will intel have to kill their use of ATi's Crossfire and support nVidia just so they're not AMD's customer?

I think this is a bad move.

AMD has made chipsets before, and they can do it again, with or without ATI. It's not a massive R&D investment like cutting edge graphics.

As for the graphic side of things, the vast majority of business is done in the low end intergrated area. Again, AMD could easily have developed this in house. So the only thing they gain from this transaction is entry into the cutthroat and volatile high end graphic market. A segment whose future is not even certain given the trouble PC gaming is in....

this makes them a much bigger for in the notebook market.

i guess it kills the relationship they've had with nvidia. i wonder what % of the AMD market nvidia chipsets make up? at one point it seemed like almost 100%, if you listened to the enthusiast banter. but any time i've seen an amd processor in an OEM system it's been ati chipset, lately.

ati is in the xbox360 and the wii. that might be very beneficial. they could fab the processors for MS in the upcoming dark days of conroe.

As an AMD-nForce user myself, I have to agree. But I don't think Nvidia was for sale.

I think the change is because AMD, having captured some market share from Intel, realized that it needed to provide complete platforms in order to compete at the next level.

As to going back to manufacturing their own chipsets, why reinvent the wheel? ATi is making chipsets right now.

Just 2 weeks ago, AMD CEO said they would never merge with ATI when the rumor started floating, because it would ruin their relationship with Nvidia.

Guess you can't better anything those CEO say!

Yeah that's what I meant. In the grand scheme of things intel has always been "ahead", but I wasn't comparing company size. I would consider any company that's eating away at it's most direct competitor's market share to be "on top" during the period that it was doing so.

no... but is it a drop in pc games accross the board or just a drop in pc game sales at the store while not counting pc games being bought online & downloaded? sometimes i see figures which don't count that...

also the amount of subscriptions to online pc games seems to continue to increase

so maybe its just a change in the way pc games are bought and played? *shrug*

AMD's Torrenza technology might be something of a prelude to this move.
