ATI will be up because AMD is going to pay a premium. AMD will be down for the same reason. 70% of all M/A activity destroys shareholder value. This is going to do the exact same thing.

AMD is a paper tiger compared to INTC and the stock price is supported by market stupidity.

Hey... Anything that helps to kill off Intel's awful integrated graphics chipsets is a good thing to me.

Netburst may stink on a value/efficiency basis but Pentium M/Centrino was extremely successful. Even then, Netburst was in the ballgame up until Athlon 64 started shipping in volume.

Intel lost some market share in the past 12 months, but it's hardly unprecedented or catastrophic. I would like to buy INTC but I don't know if they can avoid a price war with AMD where both companies bottom lines would suffer.

Like LegendKiller said, mergers are always risky and this is no exception.

Maybe they'll overhaul ATI so they produce drivers which don't suck? :D

Topic Title: AMD TO BUY ATI!

Yeah, because those ATI RADEON XPRESS 200 intergrated graphics for AMD motherboards worked so well! Look Ma I'm getting 15FPS!

Most companies switched to NVIDIA's Integrated GeForce 6150 LE by now!

Hmmm I don't know if it is good or bad, but I voted yes since it seems like they can work together to produce a better gaming rig overall.
Not keen on ATIs drivers at the moment so that is about the only neg with ATI.

If there ever was a worse time to own tech stocks after the .com bust it would be right about now....

Everything is at a 52 week low. I feel sorry for anyone that owns AMD. I love the company but this seems rather risky.

THIS WAS INEVITABLE it was a matter of time.

And it has NOTHING to do with what CPU and GPU manufacturer are best fits.

THIS IS A MATTER OF MOORES LAW!

The number of transistors on chip still continue to increase.

AMD and ATI will eventually tie the GPU and CPU on one chip. They already put the memmory controller on chip.

This should not be a shocking event. They have to start design work now so they can have a product (described above) in several years when transistor counts will have atleast doubled if not quadroopled.

Don't beleive me? Remember math coprocessors?

Guess you can't better anything those CEO say!

now *that* sounds like a shareholder suit

on average, the gains from the takeover (at least in hostile takeovers) are paid to the tendering shareholders in the form of takeover premium (which averages 50%)

Wow this is going to change everything. It used to be AMD/Nvidia (Nforce 3, Nforce 4, Nforce 5) and Intel/ATI (975X Crossfire support only), now it looks like the tables are going to turn.

ROFL, the vast majority of premium doesn't approach anywhere in the neighborhood of 50%, not sure where you got that, but if every company paid 50% premium for others, then the balance sheets of every company would be nothing more than goodwill.

Second, the premium paid is a supposed advantage and future payback, usually justified by synergies or something with a BS name like that. Most studies have shown that they are largely of dubious value and more often than not destroy investor wealth.

I am sure AMD is pitching the MB/Video "synergy" and combination of R&D efforts, which will largely be wasted and unrealized. Unless companies are mirror images of eachother, than a combination is a waste of time and money.

The only people who will profit from AMD+ATI are lawyers and bankers.

not really as mind blowing as one would think apparently

Yes it is.

Most of the Conroes are all outperforming the FX-62. The 2.4 E660 smokes the 2.8 FX-62 in most benchmarks.

You are showing gaming ONLY. Guess what, 85% of the population doesn't sit around and game! Why not represent the chips as a whole, not a select set of benches.

The Conroe is an awesome little chip and I'll be purchasing one to replace my 3200+ when they are out.

But the 85% of the population who don't game are looking for good CPU prices. AMD's price cuts may keep them in competition against Conroe.

At least, I hope this is how it's going to work...
