7930? Really?

http://www.techpowerup.com/167496/AMD-Readies-Trio-of-New-Radeon-HD-7900-Series-SKUs.html

part from a few Radeon HD 7970 "X2" dual-GPU graphics cards, and a few non-reference design HD 7970, we didn't hear much about new Radeon SKUs, at Computex. AMD or its partners never even talked about the Radeon HD 7990. It appears now, that the company is working on three new SKUs that will likely replace existing ones, in a bid to replenish the competitiveness of its "Southern Islands" GPU family. The three new SKUs include the Radeon HD 7990, of which we've been hearing for a greater part of this year; the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition, which we knew was taking shape for some time now; and the new Radeon HD 7930.

Launch of the Radeon HD 7990 has been facing quite a few delays. We can't imagine technical hurdles with regard to board design, but the performance yield, and performance-per-Watt figures the SKU will have to produce, to ever make it to the market. The HD 7990 has the tough task of performing within an acceptable range of the GeForce GTX 690, on both these fronts.

The Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition will be NVIDIA's bid to compete with the GTX 680, if merely lowering prices won't cut it for the HD 7970. AMD will raise the reference clock speeds for the HD 7970. Lastly, we're hearing of a new SKU, called HD 7930, codenamed "Tahiti LE". This SKU was first spotted when keen observers were poking around with driver information files. It's likely to be a cut-down 28 nm "Tahiti" GPU. It will be interesting to see how AMD prices it, seeing as how it's a tight squeeze between the HD 7870 GHz Edition and HD 7950.

According to a fresh 3DCenter.org report, launch of the HD 7990 is pushed all the way back to August (mid-Summer). The HD 7970 GHz Edition, if real, should be just around the corner, with a June launch predicted. The HD 7930, on the other hand, could be out after June, if the competition gets tough following launch of upper-mainstream NVIDIA SKUs.

Has to be a defective 7950

7950 is a defective 7970 :p, so this 7930 is a double defective card then!

That's too bad about the 7990, I was looking forward to that card but it appears nvidia beat them at their own game this time hence the struggle with the slipping dates.

Well if the rumors of the GHz Edition 7970 are true then AMD will have some more chips that can be made into 7950s. Maybe the 7950 will also get a bump in clock speed so there are chips available for the 7930.

All AMD has to do is rename the 7950 as the 7930 and rename the 7970 reference as the 7950.

Why not 7970 GHZ edition, 7950 GHZ edition, 7930.

Lower the 7870 price $50 and slot the 7930 into the $350 price.

$450-7970
$400-7950
$350-7930
$300-7870
$250-7850
$130-7770
$110-7750

AMD needs two more products to fill in that gap... But, at best, it looks like they can only make one.

7950 needs to be 350 as it gets eaten alive by the 670.

This is how the pricing should be

7970 Ghz Edition - 449.99
7950 - 369.99
7930 - 329.99
7870 - 299.99
7850 - 249.99

^That's why I said 7950 Ghz edition.

Have the 7970@1075+ clocks, 7950@1Ghz, and 7930@~900. Would be a much better lineup, and if the 7930 has some more cores disabled, that would put it around the 7950 now.

7930 is going to have to be clocked around 1Ghz to be competitive.

I will actualy buy a 7930, even at a little less gaming performance than 7870 & similar price.

I like the idea of good double precision on my video card. Just gonna wait to make sure the gtx660 is also retarded & I will buy my first AMD/ATI card since mach64's.

7930 is interesting. We will have to wait until we see the price and how well it overclocks.

I have owned way way way too many cards. I did own both a 465 and 5830 in previous years in 2nd/3rd type rigs. Both of them worked well. The 5830 took too much slack due to being power hungry. Once it was priced right, it was decent.

Most 7850's overclocked will probably outperform a stock 7930, so lets see some prices.

How about we wait and see since it's already been stated the lower end Nvida cards will be 40nm. This card could do very well depending on performance and over clock ability.

To be competitive with what? The 7870?

Good question :D

I guess with themselves. Nvidia has no mid-range 28nm cards.

The only Keplers cards available are geared at 3% of the market. The choice between nvidia's 40nm mid range and AMD's 28nm mid range makes the 7850 the obvious choice.

I got a 570 back from RMAing a 480. After hearing the sound of it under load, I sold that thing and bought a 7850. After overclocking it's a good deal faster and dead quiet.

No idea what nvidia plans to do for mid-range at this point. They couldn't make the GK110, so released the GK104 as their high end. Likely they are waiting until enough chips that failed as a 680 and a 670 are lying around to let them release a 660. I'm surprised they still don't have a $250-$300 Kepler card as this is where the bulk of their sales are. Buying a 570 or a 560ti over a 7850 is not a move I would make if I wanted a mid-range card.
