Once AMD fixes crossfire issues, the 7930 is sounding pretty nice...

To be competitive with what? The 7870?

I imagine the 660. A 15xx shader 7930 would be sweet if

1. Its around 300 dollars
2. Can overclock past 1200 core
3. Can support 3 way Crossfire.

The 5830 could have been amazing but Amd gimped it with no voltage control.

7950 needs to be 350 as it gets eaten alive by the 670.

This is how the pricing should be

7970 Ghz Edition - 449.99
7950 Ghz Edition - 399.99
7930 - Same clocks as old 7950 plus maybe a couple shaders knocked off to make reference 7950 owners feel better 329.99
7870 - 299.99
7850 - 249.99

Fixed and remember the 7950 has GPU compute and a 384bit bus which can have an advantage over the Nvidia lineup.. yeah I know its not a common use but still, its there. If AMD would fix crossfire issues these prices would work just fine.

RV,

The only people i ever see bring up compute is amd owners. For 99% of people they can care less. They buy a 670 because it kicks ass in a game they enjoy.

Hypocrites on both sides. Nvidia users were touting compute with Fermi, now AMD users are doing it with GCN.

EDIT:
i got ninja'd :(

but hey, GPGPU is better today, with handbrake and winzip

Why not 7970 GHZ edition, 7950 GHZ edition, 7930.

Lower the 7870 price $50 and slot the 7930 into the $350 price.

$450-7970
$400-7950
$350-7930
$300-7870
$250-7850
$130-7770
$110-7750

AMD needs two more products to fill in that gap... But, at best, it looks like they can only make one.

The 7970ghz card at 1050mhz should equal a gtx680. With the extra gig of ram they should be able to close to $500 for it. The same thing for the hd7950 ghz card; they will probably clock it to equal the gtx670 and price it right around $400. The speed bumps will put enough room between the hd7950 and h7870 for the hd7930, which will probably be $349.

Here's what I'd like to see..

$499.99 - 7970 Ghz Edition
$419.99 - 7970
$369.99 - 7950
$319.99 - 7930
$279.99 - 7870
$239.99 - 7850
$189.99 - 7790
$139.99 - 7770
$ 99.99 - 7750

The regular 7970's won't remain in the lineup. Whatever is in the market when the ghz edition comes out will be all that is left.

Arguments of convenience. Happens every gen, great isn't it?

nvidia fan:
circa 2010-2011 : compute is IMPORTANT in all consumer level (geforce) products
2012: who needs compute?

amd fan:
circa 2010-2011 : efficiency is everything
2012: who cares?

ad infinatum.

Good question :D

I guess with themselves. Nvidia has no mid-range 28nm cards.

The only Keplers cards available are geared at 3% of the market. The choice between nvidia's 40nm mid range and AMD's 28nm mid range makes the 7850 the obvious choice.

I got a 570 back from RMAing a 480. After hearing the sound of it under load, I sold that thing and bought a 7850. After overclocking it's a good deal faster and dead quiet.

No idea what nvidia plans to do for mid-range at this point. They couldn't make the GK110, so released the GK104 as their high end. Likely they are waiting until enough chips that failed as a 680 and a 670 are lying around to let them release a 660. I'm surprised they still don't have a $250-$300 Kepler card as this is where the bulk of their sales are. Buying a 570 or a 560ti over a 7850 is not a move I would make if I wanted a mid-range card.

Why did you buy an hd7850? Second rig? HTPC?

What space is there between the 7950 and the 7870? Seriously, there is about a 6% performance window to squeeze another card in there.

There are more bitcoiners out there than you think ;) But yes, I use my GTX 670 for gaming and it feels a lot smoother then my HD 7970. When I had my 7970 up for sale, I was getting crazy calls by bitcoin miners on it.

Count me as one of those. I don't have the time or patience to game like I used to...maybe 1hr every two days is what I manage...so the rest of the time I have my cards mining.

If I wanted a strictly gaming card I would get a gtx670 for the higher end or 7850 for the mid range.

Exactly. All I care about is performance, reliability and something that doesn't sound like a jet engine every time I put it through it's paces. Oh, and not getting ripped off... that's always nice. :D

Well, I'd say that for many people that compute isn't important. It's more important now than it was 2 years ago, though, and it's going to be more important in the next 2 years than it is today. I guess it just depends when you join the curve. When the "usefulness" reaches an app that applies to you.

Honestly I really don't understand what the idea is behind compute. Is the ultimate goal to have the add in card start doing some of the processor work instead of them both working?

There are tasks other than playing games that GPU's do faster than CPU's. Mainly due to the massive number of "cores" that GPU's have. OCL allows programmers to tap into this additional power that GPU's have to offer faster performance in these applications.

GPU compute is very important.

From my understanding, there will be no HD 7930 but a cut down core -- Tahiti LE -- will be used for FirePro, according to Caveman Jim at Rage, which has a nice relationship with AMD.

I am very pro nVidia and talk about GPU processing and for me is very important moving forward. Cinematic features like depth of field, etc. or ambient occlusion -- even forced on Ambient occlusion from the CP and GPU Physics. Cuda, OpenCL and Compute applications and features.

Personally very happy to see AMD go this GPU processing route and improve their tessellation, too.
