AMD Raven Ridge 'Zen APU' Thread

And unfortunately AMD don't have the spare R&D cash to go and produce a really fast halo IGP based chip for 'general' consumption.

VEGA = Dual FP16 throughput
RavenRidge = VEGA iGPU
RavenRidge = Mainstream

WTF?

It's a better APU, that's about it. For most people, there will be negligible difference between the Intel and AMD versions, and because of inertia, most people will stick with Intel.

I expect it will be good enough that I can finally stop telling my friends: "Don't buy an AMD CPU" like I have been for about a decade, when they ask about computer purchases.

But it isn't going to revolutionize anything.

It's not only better than AMD's previous APU, but also cheaper than Intel counterpart (it should be). I've witnessed how Carrizo-L and Stoney Ridge APUs sold like hot cakes to students in every computer exhibition that I've involved in. There should be no difference with Raven Ridge. But, for God's sake AMD, please force your marketing team to do something with your products publication. Almost all of big computer exhibitions in my country (Indonesia) are heavily sponsored by Intel and thanks to AMD's lack of presence majority of matured users don't even know that AMD mobile products are still existed.

I tried mining with my Kaveri. It was pathetic. Something like 2.5 MH/s mining Ethereum. Today it would not even be possible since max framebuffer was 2 GB.
 
Assuming a comparison of 35W Raven Ridge vs. Core i5 8250U and MX150 vs. Core i7 7700HQ and MX150 (the two MX150 laptops currently found at Newegg here and here) and a budget Core i5 7200U and 940MX GDDR5 laptop here these would be my predictions for Blender 2.79 and Video editing (in order of fastest to slowest):

Blender (smaller scenes, 2GB or smaller):

1.) and 2.) Not sure what would be faster MX150 (at 25W) or Vega iGPU (using most of the 35W TDP of Raven Ridge). This will depend on how the improvements in OPEN CL pan out. According to this article It does look very encouraging at this point though.
3). 940MX GDDR5
4). Zen CPU (using most of Raven Ridge's 35W TDP)
5). Intel Core i7 7700HQ
6.) Core i5 8250U
7. Core i5 7200U

Blender (larger scenes, greater than 2GB...which excludes MX150 and 940MX GDDR5):

1.) Vega iGPU (using most of the 35W TDP of Raven Ridge)
2.) Zen CPU (using most of Raven Ridge's 35W TDP)
3.) Intel Core i7 7700HQ
4.) Intel Core i5 8250U
5.Intel Core i5 7200U

Video editing:

1.) Intel Core i7 7700HQ
2.) Zen CPU (using most of Raven Ridge's 35W TDP)
3.) Core i5 8250U
4. Core i5 7200U

P.S. Would be very interesting to see how Zen and Vega iGPU do in Blender installed on Linux as well.

Looking at the following result's of Today's Blender 2.79 release I think the 35W Raven Ridge would beat the 25W MX150 in all the scenes:

Still reading comments on internet people saying RR will be as good as rx460/560. Why don't people learn to keep their expectations in check. It just doesn't have the bandwidth to do that. Not to mention its will have to work with much lower TDP means much lower clocks and throttling.
 
Why these idiotic posts about APUs which discount the CPU and talk only about the GPU? Deduct 10 fps from the average and this is what you can expect from RR:

I'm counting on three main things that RE will have going for it over BR:
An L3 cache (one with decent size at that) as testing shows that the GPU memory demands on BR and smaller chips starve the CPUs heavily. With it, the GPU won't get in the way of the CPUs as much and will have more consistent memory access.
VEGA improvements to memory bandwidth efficiency.
Smaller litho node allows for higher total performance in the same power budgets.

There are other helpful features, like nvme support from the CPU, that can only help. I don't think that it will make it as fast as dedicated gaming laptops, but at 720p, it should handle anything you want to throw at it at high settings and at 1080p, it should still play well at moderate settings on most games. That assumes dual channel ddr4 2400 or better. Drop it to one channel and it'll probably be no better than BR in most cases.
