AMD Quad Core Phenom 9500 for $199.99 at the Egg

I'd consider Phenom but AM2+ motherboards are crazy expensive unless you are happy with ECS or Biostar.🙁

i am happy with my AM2 Biostar.

everything is working as-is with no OC on my X2 4000+ Brisbane. installation was a breeze and the manual wasn't as bad as I expect.

imo, $199 seems like a good deal, but I haven't read any enough benchmark results yet

I'd call this warm at best.

The Q6600 is well worth the extra $60.

It's rather warm if you own an AM2 motherboard already.

Hot would be $150. 🙂

I was thiiiiiiiiis close to getting a 5000+ BE, but now I gotta chew on this deal for a day or two.

There are 23 associated "Combo Deals" with this Phenom. In my opine, the best is the Kingston DDR2-800 2X1GB ram for $20 AR which brings it down to that crazy HP $10/Gigstick deal (btw, I just got my $200 rebate check from HP... thankgawd).

Hmmm interesting...I like. Doesn't the errata bug affect those using the virtulization thing for multiple OS? or does it affect the normal XP user as well? [Also, I hate the stock intel heatsink locking mechanism;oh that's right, I turned this into an AMD vs Intel war 😛]

So the Q6600 is 30% better then the 9500?

Seems a great cheap way into quad core. 🙂

Okay, let me rephrase my concern; boards that use the latest Phenom derived 790 chipset are very expensive. Give me one of those, with overclocking options, for $100 and I'm onboard with Phenom. Not sure if this is a real issue or not but I read a 790 board review yesterday Here and they talked about some very specific differences from the older chipsets which optimize performance of Phenom.

Regarding the difference between Intel, the benches between the quad core chips (clock for clock) are close enough to not matter to me. Of course, the Intel chips overclock better...but they are more expensive so that's pretty much a wash. It's all about total cost and upgrade path to me.

You can get a 770 for less then $100 if you don;t have/need dual PCIe slots.

As far as I have heard, ALL Phenoms and some quad Opterons have the TLB bug. I believe AMD said they won't put a new fixed batch out until 1st Q of 2008.

I'm not trying to totally knock AMD (I sell mostly AMD X2's) over this, but facts is facts, the TLB bug is a huge unacceptable issue. The performance hit is small to huge, depending on how nickel-and-dime you are on performance numbers. I hope that AMD allows those early adopters to RMA their "broke" Phenoms for a "fixed" Phenom. I have had a few inquiries about Phenoms and I've had to tell them not to buy one until they fix them.

Agree, my Asus M2N32 WS now supports Phenom with the latest bios, but I will not even consider Phenom until they fix the TLB bug. In fact, for most of the applications I use, running a 2.2 ghz quad core is probably gonna be slower than my 2.8ghz x2, so I would be looking at spending $$ to get a downgrade with a bug.........

i wouldnt buy this either, but if they release the newer version in february with no errata for $199... that might not be that bad...

For my purposes, the current TLB issues make the current releases of the Phenoms/Opterons a no go. I just finished 4 jobs over the past two days wherein the current X2 processor ran at 100% for 1-2 hours at a time. A quad would make my jobs run faster, but the TLB errata is something my particular job load might actually be affected by. I did note that the occurrences were rare, and they never actually saw a lock-up occur in their tests, but it is possible. I just don't feel like being that potential 0.0001% that actually would see it.
