Jeesh I just received this cpu from Tiger Direct on sale for $119, installed it this afternoon and after having at 3.6 then 3.8 for an hour each. I upped the vcore to 1.416, ram to 1.6v, hit the multi to 20x just for laughs to see if it would boot and VOILA !!

I'm about 15 mins thru prime95 ( not much I know ) but I've got a ton of progs open, blasting some mp4s video toons ( Queen: Radio gaga, haha )

It's rollin' at about 54C load which isn't bad from what I've read.

Here's the box and what's inside...........I'll post some screenies to this thread once ( if?? ) I get past 8 hours or so.

AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.2 GHz @ 4 GHz
ASRock 880GMH/USB3 AMD HDMI mATX 1.50 BIOS

Scythe Samarai SCSMZ-2000 92mm fan/hs

G. Skill 8GB (4 x 2GB) DDR 1600 F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL

Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-bit OEM
Kingston 128GB SSD SNV425-S2BD (OS drive)

Bottom line, to me anyway, is don't waste your money with 965,970 when you can just crank up a 955.

cheers,

Don't PIIs start acting wonky when hitting ~51C?
That's the only thing dissuading me from trying to OC my unlocked X3 740 BEs higher.

nah, 50-55C is no biggie under full stress which is where I'm at. I'm over an hour into prime95 with temp fluctuating between 54 and 55C. seems like it quite likes it! LOL

This Scythe fan/hs is no slacker and it's not very loud either. A nice alternative to the "remove the mainboard, condo tower" coolers. Small footprint too. I just used some old Arctic Silver I had laying around from the 20th Century. Nothing fancy. Not my first time OCing though either. :) Nothing seems "wonky"

Pictures after an hour or so of prime95. Not braggin' , I'm just surprised !! nice deal on cpu

Yeah just got a 955 from the 'bay too. My 1045MPM batch cpu needs 1.356v for 4GHz/2.8GHz NB prime blend stable and 1.416v for 4.1GHz. I likey. My main systems's cpu history in the last two years: Phenom II 920, unlocked 550, unlocked 550 C3, 1055T, E5200, Q9300, back to E5200, 555 that couldnt unlock, and now 955 (last four processors in a span of a little over a month)

I like messing with new processors lol.

Yeah, It's great when you get a good one. I'm coming off at 555BE that wouldn't unlock as well. OCed decent ( 3.8GHz ) but wouldn't do 4 stable even at 1.45vcore. This 955BE is a monster. These are probably down binned 970's. Wouldnt' surprise me.

The 555BE I got is a nice OC'er.. goes to 3.7 on stock and 4GHz core/2600 NB@1.45. I recently unlocked it to tri core and surprisingly.. I could OC the chip to the same levels as before.

These C3 and E0(Thuban) stepping CPU are pretty good OC'ers..

Wow what kind of temps you getting @ that vcore? What cooler you using?

Maxing around 52c running F@H SMP. I'm using a Cooler Master Hyper N520 HSF, and my case (Antec Nine Hundred II) has 4x120's and 1x200 fan.

temps are good. that's a good OC. Some big fans in that case !!:D
I'm using an older full tower like this...

.....but with a window fan in the side panel. 5 x 80mm fans ( good ones ). that and the Scythe seem to be doing the job.

Not a bad value at $119! My very early PhII 940 falls flat on it's face anywhere above 3.6GHz regardless of voltage.

Could be worse, My 6 month old 940 can't even touch 3.6, it needs 1.5v just to hit 3.5, and even with my giant Sunbeam CCF 120 hits 70* under Prime at 3.5

16 hours of prime95 and not hiccup. That'll do it for me. 24 hours is cruel and unusual. LOL

it's not too late. I'd at least try turning it up to 3.4 or 3.6 as you've already got the aftermarket cooler by the looks of your sig.

I'd be careful, $35 for that seems way to low. Something might be wrong with it.
No worries. I'm willing to risk that amount of money.

I bought two defective pairs of Klipsch Promedia 2.1s for $40 off of CL here as well. They were in pretty good shape and the only thing I needed to fix them up was a couple of fuses, a cap and a replacement control pod. Wouldn't have complained even if I lost te $40 outright.
