AMD May Be Preparing Phenom II X8

I really don't like the direction AMD has taken as of late. The FX series is having major problems and they're going to come out with this junk?

If performance of the top model can come at least 60% of a 2600k with its 8 processing threads or cores at around $140 i could see them selling for the hardcore users.

To bad for them they'll be getting less for the same money now than they would have if they'd bought *any* athlon/phenom II part in the past 3+ years.

These would presumably be on AM3+ instead of AM3. I was hoping for a 8-core K10h CPU for AM3,, but I guess not.

Yeah total deal breaker considering the SLi compatible boards all drive a premium and not even AMD's top offerings on 32nm are a good performance match. If you go AM3+ and you have an x4/x6 already you're headed backwards no matter what you buy moving forward so I wouldn't feel to left out.

For just a little moment I hoped that these were die-shrinks of Phenom II. Oh well. 🙁

Totally fell for that too, even had my palm palms out.

Yup i too thought they were like thubans but on a smaller process with 8 cores.

That would have been killer many people have hoped for that but perhaps the age of the phenom 2 line of processors has come to a end with close to 3 years running which is a century.

Like it or love it the bulldozer line is here to stay sadly enough.

x4 940 45nm benchmarked.....http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/phenom-ii-940,2114.html Jan 7th 2009

For $89 dollars I would buy one. Then I would get a minor overclock of 3.4Ghz and I would be happy working with those 8 cores. Remember what Frank said guys remember what Frank said!!!

"Remember when I told you when you first started working for me, the guys that last in this business, are the guys who fly straight. Low-key, quiet. But the guys who want it all, chicas, champagne, flash... they don't last."

- Frank Lopez

You guys have to look at this in a positive light for the first time in history you may be able to buy a 8 core cpu for under $120 because AMD " dosent want to harm the appeal of the FX brand" sounds like a deal to me especially if your talking Athlon 2 pricing 🙂

I thought this was going to be the case as well 🙁

I'm totally baffled why they elected to name these Phenom II's instead of Phenom III's, regardless the performance.

You knew it was coming. The FX lines was supposed to be the high end.

Labeling these as Phenom II seems shady. Are we sure these aren't the 8-Core Opterons (Magny-Cours & Interlagos) re-branded? Labeling those as Phenom II would be alright.

I am 100% sure that they're not. Remember, Magny-Cours is a big-ass MCM. I don't think that you could fit both of the dies on AM3+. Also, the 2.6 GHz 8-core has a rated TDP of 115W. I don't think that AMD could make a 3GHz part with only a 125W TDP.
(Not that I know how big the individual dies are)

Might be able to if they were shrunk.

AMD's IQ has dropped by a score of 30. I feel bad. 🙁

With every step they make, their reputation gets ruined day by day.

Their ATi division is in much better shape. ATi does not release as much FUD/rumormills as their CPU division does. This keeps the competitor on their edge - build better performing products for cheaper.

32 nm phenom II x 8 with 12MB of L3 cache snuggled in would nice.

I would not call a phenom II a phenom III unless it was massively improved.

I don't get it. So are these 8 'core' bulldozers that run at low clock speeds, or are they actual 8 core Phenon IIs with 8 real K10 cores that run at low clock speeds?

If it's the latter, are they built on 45nm or 32nm?

Same, now I am disappointed. An 8 core Phenom II on 32nm would be a sweet CPU.

(record scratch)

Wait a second... are we being disappointed about a CPU company not remaking their architecture from 2009? This must be some weird twilight computer world.

Probably all of the crappy Bulldozer chips that couldn't hit the targeted clockspeeds are these Phenoms....lol. Clever. The people who don't know any better will see "Phenom II X8" and buy them because of everyone saying NOT to buy Bulldozer.
