What seems curious (to me anyway) is the refusal to ditch the Ryzen 5 1500X and Ryzen 3 1300X.

Why are they still there?

Defective vega , the 1500x and the 1300x may turn out to be harvested apu's with a disabled because of too many defects gpu part.
And some harvested "ordinary" ryzen cpu's.

Being a bit extreme in thinking : Maybe they have some way to reroute internal signals to pins.
Since the cpu and apu already have pins that have multi functionality depending on internal multiplexers.
Similar to embedded microcontrollers have for example I2S,SPI, I2C, uart or ethernet RMII or just a parallel port.
But it is a wild guess.

It's not matter of pins but the PCIe Phy inside the core.
Zeppelin has twice the lanes in it's Phy, so unless AMD updates the specs then using Raven won't fly.

I guess it would come down to what the cost would be to have a complete pcie phy in an apu that is normally half disabled because half of the IF is connected to the internal gpu. But that pcie phy is only fully functional when the IF connection to the gpu is not used and those signals (between cpu and gpu and IF connected) could be rerouted to the phy giving full bandwidth for a x16 link phy.
That would be some serious SOC like functionality. But only worth the trouble if binning proper working APU's is a serious problem. Which i highly doubt is an issue. So, i agree.

That makes me wonder,
I wonder if we will see an update in 12nm APU with zen+ and vega but not for higher clocks but lower power consumption at the same clocks.
Would be great for 2in1 laptops.

Maybe they are keeping a line running for threadripper and the will ditch some of the defective core parts in old style Ryzen 5/3?

More likely EPYC. They stated that TR2 will come 2H this year using Pinnacle Ridge. Their EPYC roadmap shows Zen2 based follow on for the next EPYC. So, they need to build current Zeppelin based EPYC for a while to supply EPYC customers for the next couple of years at least.

Most likely just transitional parts until 12nm production is at full volume.

It seems questionable that AMD would take Pinnacle Ridge dies and disabled half the cores so that they can be sold as quad-core parts, now that AMD has Raven Ridge dies.

AMD is trying to match Intel's price points. 1300X is at i3-8300's price point, and 1500X is at 8400's price point.

Oh man, so tempting, to get a Ryzen 2000 CPU, but also, so hard to choose, between those, and APUs. Either way, it sounds like a great future for AMD!

I'm still toying with what to do with my Ryzen R5 1600 CPU rigs.

How many people buying the 2700x are going to run it at stock clocks? Not trolling, just wondering.

I would be overclocking that thing to the limits of the included cooler, regardless of power consumption.

If the 2700x is anything like the 1800x, very few people will buy it for overclocking. The next bin down will be where overclockers hit the sweet spot.

Well, this time around, Ryzen 7 2700X comes with a better cooler than Ryzen 7 2700 (instead of no cooler at all).

The better cooler is a good reason for to justify an extra $30-$40, but $70 is a little too much.

Not enough if that was the only difference, but it will be interesting to see how it performs stock vs overclocked, with the new XFR/PB modes.

Even if you intend to overclock having a nicer base clock with XFR/PB might be an additional bonus.

The good included HSF effectively shrinks the gap to say $30-40 for having that better base clock that actually functions with XFR/PB, I could see spending that extra $30-40.

Correct, they won't have any integrated GPU.

Yes, further up the page we are discussing that, and I mentioned it was a nice change, making the X CPUs more desirable.

Not just a HSF, but a fairly nice one.

This is kind of the hard choices you have to to in sales and marketing. Personally I say not supplying a cooler with the X or K versions is not a bad thing. A lot of people buying these CPUs will have their own cooler already and hence the supplied one will go in the trash bin. Just not very environment friendly.

I would like X and K version without a cooler but with a smaller price difference to the non-x or non-k version. Pay $20 more to get a faster CPU but you also need to buy a cooler.

Wanting to pay only $20 more for the faster chip is just wishful thinking. That isn't any kind of reasonable segmentation.

I probably would these days. I'm not that into overclocking anymore and feel like its not worth losing other features of the cpu over. AMD and even Intel to an extent run their chips a lot closer to the top overclock to start with making the whole exercise kind of a waste of time IMO. If you like overclocking for the sake of overclocking I understand that but it looks the money saving part has been monetized out of existence to me.
