All right, here's the deal: My friends are getting new computers soon, and they are wondering what processor to base them on. I personally just bought an AMD-64 processor, and really like it... However, they claim that some people have been having serious problems with the AMD-64 processor.

Any thoughts? Verification of AMD-64 problems? Debunking of this myth?

Links would be helpful.

Thanks,

Umm, what problems? Could you be more specific? Perhaps your friends are victims of Intel FUD.

Complete hogwash. Intel has more problems (heat related) then AMD rite now.

What kind of specific problems have they been referring to anyway?

while neither manufacturer can assure 100% reliability with no exceptions, i havent heard one iota of common problems with them

The only reason to go Intel today is if you are doing high end video editing. Intel would perform better performing such tasks. For anything else especially gaming AMD will give you the same performance or better for a cheaper price.

To even mention that "other chip guy"'s name is treasonous! Punishable by stoning of 1,000 of the "other guy's" cpus being shot at you a point blank range by one of those pitching machines :p

I would have to agree that it's actualy Intel thats having more issues right now. Many people are having serious issues keeping 3.2ghz and higher prescotts from running way too hot. Even with a thermalright XP-120 and 93.6cfm fan my load temps would go over 70c and thermal throttling would kick in. I had to go to water cooling to keep it from over heating. The 600 series that enables EM64T supposedly doesn't have as bad of heat issues, but they cost more than their no EM64T counterparts. As others have said, unless you do video editing, or heavy multitasking, you would be much better off with an Athlon 64.

It will take more than SSE3 to help the Athlon 64 pull ahead of video encoding. Intel still has the advantage with its doubled pumped ADD FPL units (that generate a lot of heat in the prescott) , it's lower latency L2 cache accesses and likely the biggest factor are the Intel compilers for the FPL arrays.

The FX's and A64's do some good with the low-latency memory access's, which the Intel cannot compete with. Which is why Intel adds 2 MBs of L2 cache on their chip to keep their extended pipeline fed. Doesn't really help Intel on desktop App's though. 1MB cache seems to be the sweet spot.

There are 3 main reasons why anyone would want a Intel right now:

1. Dell and other vendors provide pre-builds with warrantee.
2. Media encoding and a lot of it. Because the AMD's are no slouches either when encoding. The Intel is just superior.
3. Product faith over history and their name.

If you don't give a damn or care little about any of those reasons - AMD is by far the better choice right now.

mine's been running fine for a while now. 0 crashes(except when medieval total war crashes randomly to desktop after 4-5minutes of play. software conflict though.)

Some people have problems because they run the parts out of spec (overclock) and don't do the thorough testing needed to make sure the overclock is stable.

Other people have problems because they buy cheap parts, don't assemble properly, or don't bother to test (even the best brands are subject to manufacturing defects).

If your friends really have heard of problems, it's mostly likely from people that didn't take the time to put together their machine properly.

Those people would probably make the same mistakes putting together an intel machine. Some people really should just buy a pre-built system.

I'll still take the Pentium M over anything AMD in a notebook. For a desktop, I don't even bother looking at Intel anymore...

Meh, that's exactly what I thought before when some guy was telling me that AMD chips are less stable than Intel chips. I say he's full of it.

Agreed. ATM The Dothan CPU cannot be beat for a mobile CPU. I wouldn't even consider anything else in a notebook. Likewise, I wouldn't consider anything but an A64 in a desktop computer.

as far as desktops are concerned i have had a 2.8c, 3000+ clawhammer, and a 2800+ newcastle. all have been very stable with few issues. i do have to say that my a64s feel slightly faster, and i can encode a dvd to divx in an hour give or take a little on the 3000+.

Alright... they don't say what kind of problems, just "Big Problems"

I personally love my AMD system.

Thanks for the support guys.

If anyone DOES have problems with their AMD64, please post here.

They are full of BS. If they could come up with even ONE bonafide, varafiable problem I would be amazed. And every reply in this post is good. The Intels over 3.4 right now are hot, and AMD's run cool. And Regs description and comments are also quite true.

And thanks stevty2889 for being honest about your situation....

when "THEY" ususally are quoted as the people that something, it is a cue to take it with a grain of salt.
