Isn't this fraud? I can understand them rebranding a card and naming it one tier lower, but taking one card and slapping the same number tier on it is openly deceptive. People expect the 8970 to be a different card at least, if not faster.

G92 is the most rebranded gpu in history. It was in the 8,9,GTS 2, GTX 2m, GTS 3m. I might have even missed some.

This is just an OEM money scheme, it's not the new parts.

Because even Nvidia didn't release a 400 series right after releasing 300 OEM.


Look at Richland - it's a placeholder to get rid of unwated trinity inventory by calling it something else.

When HD8000 OEM is released - so will 700 series.
(Within normal timeframes anyway).
This is pretty much the same move Rory is pulling on the CPU side - and it that way makes more sense.
He prolongs the life of his current generation to sell more - and not have to invest and keep up the pace.
And again makes sense as to why they paid out with WSA.

He's slowing it down - so AMD doesn't run off the tracks - in a crash\burn scenario.


this whole bullshit with "It's not the real new thing" is useless without pulling a Time Paradigm into effect.
A release is always new.

That was mitigated slightly by a die shrink to G92b and some clock bumps. Even NVIDIA hasn't pulled the rebranding stunt that just happened, at least not on the desktop in many years.

The 6770/6750 started off as oem re-brands also. Ended up in retail. I don't think the whole lineup that was just re-branded will end up in retail, but I bet some parts of the lineup will.

Not sure what it'll be called (although 9000 makes sense) but would seem to be a ways off if they're releasing OEM 8000 parts. I recall reading ~6mos ago it would be June. At the time I thought it couldn't be right, but it might have been.

That's true. There is far less noise. It's not as hot either. Although I would have liked GK110, GK104 does very well in a dual GPU card. The performance improvement isn't huge, but when combined with less heat and noise it makes for a good upgrade from three reference 7970s.

Its pulling a fast one plan and simple and its legal as long as you have the specifications available as then the ball is in the consumers hand as the name of the product is irrelevant.

I used to think the Pro version of gfx cards was the better version before i built my first PC as of course when its time for an enthusiast to spend money you look far more closely.

LOL awesome, the industry rebadged the same stuff so many times they ran out of numbering schemes and came back full circle.

Actually I think ATI long time ago already had a Radeon 8500 which was a good card in it's day, which they rebadged to a Radeon 9100 or something.

I guess you could make the claim the more recent cards have been "HD" series though, haha. Like already mentioned, maybe we'll get an "HD X" series someday.

Can someone help me out here, what exactly is the difference tech wise between the HD 7970 and newer HD 8970?
