Unfortunately, there isn't anything Nvidia or AMD can really do. It's not them that's slowed down, but process tech. As we saw with GTX580 and 6970, you can't really improve on a design while being on the same process. They usually get the most out of it the first time around.
 
Kepler may now be delayed until Q1 2012 as a result of 28nm issues. How is this related to HD7000 series?

"ATI is still on schedule to launch its 28nm chip in 2011, other sources are telling us, and ATI’s chip will be affected by the same issues, mainly the poor yields of the 28nm process. Even if ATI launches in 2011, very late Q3 or first half of Q4 2011 were the dates that we’ve heard, the chip wont really be massively available until some point in 2012."

It may very well be that we won't see good availability of new 28nm GPUs until next year. I was so looking forward to both of them releasing this year in large quantities. I hope these rumors aren't true.

They can't do anything about the fabs themselves but they are totally in control of their own plans.

I would disagree with that. You are not seeing everything that is possible. What you are seeing is the implementation of AMD and Nvidia's ideas.

For example. If for some reason fab tech were to be stopped at 40nm, I'm pretty sure that you would eventually see products with double to triple the capabilities of the 1st gen products.

The reason you don't see them now is because AMD and Nvidia function on the assumption that fab tech will advance so it is more cost effective to make a design that is in line with what those fabs will be offering at that time.

ha maybe! You better set up a deal alert over at slickdeals. To get it that low I think it would be a deal involving a rebate and maybe reselling software also.

I've already seen deals for $148AR w Shogun 2 and $165AR with Shogun 2 and Dirt 3.


I already picked up a GTX 460 SSC+ that came out to $85 net and I kept the Mafia II code.
 
I could see the i7-970 being near impossible to explain for a stubborn customer. For the non-researched, you would basically have to trust what the person tells you since there is no plausible reason for the 970 being faster than 975 based on name alone. The 8800 vs 9400 wouldn't really be that hard.
 
I am keeping a close eye on the AMD HD 7000 series because someone made me a great offer for my two sapphire 5850 xtremes so I have sold them both. I am now using a palit geforce gtx 460 sonic 1gb which I've found to be very good so will be keeping an eye on Nvidia too to see what they are going to be releasing. I always keep my options open and will consider AMD or Nvidia.

I'd rather see them improve their memory controller's ability to handle faster vram, and up the rop's. Move back to a 320-bit for the highest end parts and shave off 64-bits for mid range stuff. Lets see some die size reductions which would lead to eventually having more competitive prices.

AMD Southern Islands is very likely to release in 2011. Nvidia Kepler has little to no chance. From what I have heard

Yeah, I think delay articles are auto-generated for every new processor. They often have a great chance of being right, so the sooner you write an article about it the more credible you can claim to be if it turns out to be true.

The new process and new GPU designs I think make it pretty likely though.

Anyone else kinda surprised that the 7790 is going to be using GCN? Not sure why, but I was kinda expecting it to be maybe a die shrunk 6870 or 6900 (with say 1000 shaders). There was a report about Trinity's GPU being similar to 6800 series, so I wondered how quickly they'd move to GCN.

It would seem to be a little odd that they would move to VLIW4 and then dump it straight away. I wouldn't be surprised if the first 28nm chip is a 6970->7770 and clocked to 1ghz with the 7970(GCN core) following once yields improve.

Or maybe VLIW4 is the basis for the Xbox720 GPU and AMD just wanted to iron any issues, so the 6900 series is a one off.

VLIW4 is the basis of Trinity. So it's not being dumped entirely.
 
it's mostly my own conjecture because we know when southern islands was taped out and looking at prior release schedules it is a very comfortable estimate for a Q4 2011 release by AMD provided TSMC is working fine which the lack of credible news in that regard means that it probably is.

but I point out fudzilla in particular as always being 100% off base. if you go back 6-12 months time in fudzilla you can see so many articles with so many way off base rumours. even semiaccurate + whatever isnt as bad as fudzilla

the gossip says that trinity is based on cayman (and common sense points to this as well) so when you say they aren't "dumping" it that might not be exactly true as they are obviously using prior generation graphics technology in their APU series - also cayman is 6900 series not 6800

I hope not. Unlike GTX580/6970 which are pretty much a "refresh" generation, GTX680 and 7970 are a full generational jump. In that instance, I fully expect mid-range offerings to equal or even outperform today's high-end. If 7870 (mid-range) is just a die shrunk HD6870, that would be extremely disappointing.

I would agree, but I'm talking about the 7700 series, not the 7800. I'm surprised more than anything, and actually take it as a pretty good sign. Seems like they're aiming to continue the scaling and packaging ideas they've been pushing for a while now, which has served them well.

Really, I guess I shouldn't be surprised. The quicker they can get adoption of their new design up, probably the better.
