If its any good, then AMD Phoenix might be an apt name for it...
Given Bulldozer's TDP woes, I wouldn't name any new AMD chip after something that catches fire...

ThreadRipper sounds like a script kiddie malware package
The Phoenix doesn't catch fire.
It rises from the ashes of the fire caused by its predecessor.
Most suitable!
Associated with the Sun, a phoenix obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor. According to some sources, the phoenix dies in a show of flames and combustion, although there are other sources that claim that the legendary bird dies and simply decomposes before being born again.
Sounds like an awful cartoon superhero character name.Ryzen with Threadripper technology works for me.

Doesn't matter that the Athlon brand has been AMD's lower-tier for the last 10 years because no one's been buying them, so no one actually knows it's been the lower-tier brand.
Kinda like how Audi's reputation being garbage didn't matter since only about 5 people knew of Audi.
Disagree, those Athlon II X3/X4 chips were pretty popular. I know I used a bunch of them in budget builds for people.
Yeah, but there's a difference between popular among geeks and well known with the general public. Here in the UK, I don't think I've ever seen a single AMD advert on the TV, or on billboards. Whereas Intel adverts (or laptop adverts ending with the Intel jingle) are pretty common.
And Venom is better? It sounds like a cheesy superhero.Ryzen sounds like a WWE Wrestler name.
It seems to be another example of how, even though the humanities are constantly looked down on by most in the tech world, a mastery of language and related matters matters. Misconstruing and bastardizing the concept of Zen as they have is a ham-handed attempt and suggests that the people doing this marketing have a background in STEM or something unrelated to having a strong grasp of language nuance and philosophy. Why they are trying to fuse the Zen codename into the branding is beyond me

Is the Athlon name currently not used?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113408It's currently in use for iGPU-less FM2+ CPUs like the Athlon x4 870k and 880k. There's going to be a similar AM4 series of chips . . . the 950k or 960k or something? Anyway, basically Bristol Ridge with the iGPU failed/disabled.
Back in the mid 90s Audi's mindshare was practically nil in the US. But they had a rep for unintended acceleration after a hit piece aired on 60 minutes in the mid 80s. Then came the new A4 and all had already been forgotten.
