I like Venom or maybe some spin on that... Why they are trying to fuse the Zen codename into the branding is beyond me, Ryzen sounds like a WWE Wrestler name.

The Phoenix doesn't catch fire.

It rises from the ashes of the fire caused by its predecessor.

Most suitable!

Associated with the Sun, a phoenix obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor. According to some sources, the phoenix dies in a show of flames and combustion, although there are other sources that claim that the legendary bird dies and simply decomposes before being born again.

It flames out, comes back from the ashes of its predecessor...before proceeding to flame out. Describes K10 to Bulldozer perfectly.

Doesn't matter that the Athlon brand has been AMD's lower-tier for the last 10 years because no one's been buying them, so no one actually knows it's been the lower-tier brand.

Kinda like how Audi's reputation being garbage didn't matter since only about 5 people knew of Audi.

Disagree, those Athlon II X3/X4 chips were pretty popular. I know I used a bunch of them in budget builds for people.

Yeah, but there's a difference between popular among geeks and well known with the general public. Here in the UK, I don't think I've ever seen a single AMD advert on the TV, or on billboards. Whereas Intel adverts (or laptop adverts ending with the Intel jingle) are pretty common.

Sure, but I am assuming that we're talking about DIYer subset of the PC population :)

In the broader PC buying population, yeah, I doubt most people have ever even heard of AMD. They know "Intel Inside" and the sales reps are trained to be able to sell Intel-based products (educating customers on i3/i5/i7, Pentium/Celeron for example).

And Venom is better? It sounds like a cheesy superhero.

It seems to be another example of how, even though the humanities are constantly looked down on by most in the tech world, a mastery of language and related matters matters. Misconstruing and bastardizing the concept of Zen as they have is a ham-handed attempt and suggests that the people doing this marketing have a background in STEM or something unrelated to having a strong grasp of language nuance and philosophy.

It's a pity that they decided to relegate to good Athlon name to the low end. Back in the days, you had the AMD Athlon K7 700Mhz, which for a while was the top end Athlon and faster than anything Intel had. Then you had the Athlon XP, which for a while was faster than the equivalent Pentiums. Then the Athlon 64, which blew away the Pentiums.

Some marketing guru obviously decided to reuse the Athlon name for low end CPUs, a decision I'll never understand.

Anyway, my hope would be that they resurrect the Athlon name. Something like AMD Athlon A4-3000, for a quad core with a base frequency of 3Ghz. Or AMD A8-3500K, for an 8 core with 3500 base frequency and unlocked multiplier.

Is the Athlon name currently not used?

It's currently in use for iGPU-less FM2+ CPUs like the Athlon x4 870k and 880k. There's going to be a similar AM4 series of chips . . . the 950k or 960k or something? Anyway, basically Bristol Ridge with the iGPU failed/disabled.

Back in the mid 90s Audi's mindshare was practically nil in the US. But they had a rep for unintended acceleration after a hit piece aired on 60 minutes in the mid 80s. Then came the new A4 and all had already been forgotten.

Ah.

Since the phenomenon was confined to the US of A (we'll not speculate as to why it was confined to there...), I never heard of it.
