So I leave for 30 mins and now have no clue what mantle is. Can someone summarize?

Its a new API that will make it more console like in programming for the PC, compatible with GCN radeons. Low level access, more features, massively increased performance. If it works anything like advertised, ie. reducing overhead of windows, it will be a massive perf gain.

GCN-unique graphics library with 9x the performance of DirectX. Basically, it lets the graphics card behave more autonomously, so it can make more calls without waiting for orders from the CPU... basically the first part of what AMD wants to happen with HSA.

Considering they only said it would lower CPU overhead I don't think it will make the GPUs any faster in the games, which is disappointing for me.

lol I think AMD pretty much ruined their golden chance at selling these new GPUs.

Worst presentation ever.

😀

In before reviews say the 290X is slower than GTX Titan but consume more power

😀

It wont be 9X the performance, no. But bypassing DX and windows already should yield ~2 or more, based on what developers often say about the windows penalty versus coding to the metal.

They specifically said it only lowers the CPU overhead.

So that means it's great for *cough* AMD CPUs *cough*

It does jack squat for me.

should have started with the mantle stuff.

mantle was probably how they were running bf4 at 4k on the 7990 at gdc. the demo of the bf4 sp was at eyefinity probably at the 3x 1080p they were running earlier.

this is good news for laptop and casual gamers on apu. direct calls to metal should give them a nice performance boost for non cpu limited games. maybe allow them to play some more demanding games at better quality. kaveri should be very interesting for a gaming laptop.

big question is if it requires gcn2.0 or if gcn1.0 will get some lovin.

Mantle could be a seriously big win for AMD when you take into account the games being developed on consoles. I'm surprised nVidia let this happen to them, if Mantle supports the console GPUs, every port will already have that code path and require minimal work to port. This also drastically increases compatibility between the PS4 and X1 if it runs on them both.

No, low level means it's hardware specific.

It is open source, so Nvidia can use it if they see fit

"We've been told at the GPU14 Tech Day event that the Mantle API is open, so theoretically Nvidia could purpose the technology in their GPUs"

Mantle is an windows low level api. It has nothing to do with consoles. Because their APIs are from the start low level.

So you need to work on a unique Mantle path for the windows version.

Pretty sure it was explicitly stated that the dev work done on the consoles will be much easier to port over to the PC side using Mantle. The dev tool is designed to create synergy (hate the word but it's apropos here).

Mantle is open and they already stated it will be launched for Linux as well, it's an API that allows much closer to the metal calls to GCN cards, which both consoles are using. I see a million and one benefits for them to port it over as an API for the consoles and very few for Microsoft of Sony to not let them.

[redacted] how did Nvidia let this happen... JHH must be priming them for an Intel buyout...

I am extremely sad. Someone tell me it's going to be okay...

Inappropriate language for the technical forums.
