Everyone knows the FX use more power. But the thing is they still use very manageable amounts of power in practical real world terms, even if more than their Intel counterparts. They are not hard to cool, they are not hard to overclock, you don't need to spend more on a power supply in the vast majority of cases (a quality 500 watt power supply is plenty capable of running an FX, even overclocked). And as I pointed out earlier, they take to under-volting quite well. I think the upgrade path is the biggest draw back, if someone buys a four module FX today then the socket is maxed out already. If you buy an i5 today, you can upgrade down the road. But real world power use of the FX and performance are typically only an issue on internet forums.

I have an older FX-8350/GTX-680 rig sitting right next to a newish 6600k/GTX-770 on my desk as I type this post. (both running Windows 10 Pro)

Fan-boys from either camp won't like it but seat-of-the-pants its pretty much impossible to tell which is which in terms of performance. Both systems are quite fast and frankly IMO the money I spent upgrading to Skylake would have been better spent on a GTX-1070.

Having said this I would not buy any FX cpu these days unless maybe as a drop-in upgrade to an existing FX-based system running a 4/6 core model.

I've still got a mid 2011 Sabertooth 990fx board wrapped up somewhere in my cupboard. It's never had an AM3+ CPU in it, just a placeholder Phenom 2. I've never given up hope of finding a cheap 8 core and some ECC RAM and putting it all to use as a server, but the prices have never been attractive enough for me...

Even with Ryzen just days away FX prices are still up and the RAM I need is raising in price. I suspect I should just cut my losses on the 990fx board and aim for a newer setup. I've got hope some Ryzen boards will take ECC also.

Just curious, what is your day to day productivity?
Because opening folders and looking at cat videos will be exactly the same.

It was mostly cutting multimedia and editing in Atom (chrome basked editor.) Some 3D modeling/editing in Blender and Solidworks. Now I work in a field much more fitting to this forum.

I love the FX hate... I've very happily gamed on mine without a problem. If you tweak your CPU, there is a lot of room to improve the FX. I was able to run my FX9370 @ ~1.25v / 4.4GHz. That's really not bad. I have two high end AM3+ boards, if I didn't already have two FX's I'd definitely get another one.
I was able to do that with an FX-8320E for a lot less money. An FX octa core is and FX octa core. If you have a decent air cooler laying around buy the cheapest one and OC it. Newegg had an FX-8300 for $99.99 yesterday.
