AMD cuts prices

Actually kinda surprised they're cutting the prices on the A8/A6/A4 chips, Intel really doesn't have anything to beat those yet - unless this is based on IB GPU (which I didn't think was going to beat these yet?).

Based on how big they (the chip's die size) I felt like llano on the desktop was over priced before.

Now that you can get an A8 and motherboard for ~$200, well, now we're talking 🙂

165 isnt a bad price for an 8120

Makes the MC deal less impressive, maybe they'll sweeten it up some more....

What did Anand say? That there are no bad processors, just processors at the wrong price.

It's hard to believe there can be much margin on the big FX CPUs, though.

If i could run a 8120 at 5ghz daily i could live with the horrible ipc

I wouldn't think so either, no. They're quite big chips to produce.

These are the kinds of prices we should have seen at launch but it's taken this long for them to wake up. The 8150 should be beneath the 2500K MSRP instead of hovering all-too-closely to the 2600K. At $180 the 8150 would actually make some sense.

Let's hope PD delivers a version of that. Even if it all it does is drive some competition (like given us a 6C/12T mainstream socket Haswell.... I can dream....) a little execution on AMD's part would be a boon to us all.

An unfortunate situation, really. Too bad they don't have ability/volume to create more targeted SKUs. I am still skeptical on how much that huge, slow L3 cache brings to the table for 99% of people buying desktop CPUs. A faster L2 and improved IMC would like bring a better benefit. Oh well.

I agree on the pricing. AMD is not a in a position to dictate pricing to the desktop market at the moment, clearly.

8120 is a bargain now. And the 8150 is half decent if you want to try and shoot to the moon on overclocks.

8120 is definitely a good deal. I nay actually use one in a future cheaper build for somebody.

Nice job AMD.

Adam, Noticed you have a 500r white case. I have the same one sitting in the box at home. How do you like it?

You must have the OCD for switching out rigs like I do! haha

When is amd going to 22nm?

They're not. The next node is 28nm followed by the 20nm half node.

The first full-flow silicon with TSVs is expected to start running at Fab 8 in Q3 2012

I haven't seen AMD's time frame expectations for 20nm but GloFo taped out ARM chips at 20nm late last year. If I had to guess, though, maybe late 2013 early 2014? That's assuming AMD goes with GloFo given that they've essentially severed ties and now AMD can choose which fab they prefer.

They will be competing with trinity soon enough. Need to move product now before trinity is released.

With as cheap as the FX 6000 and FX 8000 parts are now, the FX 4000 is a horrible value, but these cuts are definitely needed given the poor performance FX has in many tasks.

Keep in mind that the 8-core BD is now almost exactly 2x the die size compared to IB (315mm vs. 160mm). That's gotta hurt, because Intel rarely has yield issues AMD has to price theirs BELOW a chip half their size.

what else are they going to do? cut prices is the only option for them now. what I want to see is releasing a faster model or maybe a new revision of the original BD w/ better OC headroom etc.

Got all excited until I noticed how bad the selection of ITX boards is for AMD vs Intel. I really wanted to test a cheaper Llano. But 2 ITX boards pulled up on Newegg. :\
