AMD CPU And GPU Roadmaps For 2015-2020 Officially Emerge

By 2017 AMD plans to introduce what it described as a High Performance Computing APU or HPC for short. This APU will carry a sizable TDP between 200 and 300 watts. This sort of APU, AMD expects, will excel in HPC applications. Similarly powerful APUs were not attempted up to this point because they were simply not viable due to the amount of memory bandwidth required to keep such a powerful APU fed. Thankfully however stacked HBM ( High Bandwidth Memory ) will make such designs not only possible but extremely effective as well. As the second generation of HBM is 9 times faster than GDDR5 memory and a whopping 128 times faster than DDR3 memory.
For this type of chip it all comes down to who has the most efficient GPU architecture, since the GPU is what will occupy the vast majority of the die area. Between AMD and Intel we all know who that is, so Intel will be more or less hopelessly lost in this market segment.

Nice opportunity that opens up for AMD here through HBM combined with powerful APUs.
 
AMD needs to come up with a product against Knights Landing. And another rebranded GCN product with or without HBM isnt one of them.

Not to mention the cooling solution for a 200-300W APU will be interesting.

I'm smelling the next FX-9590 but this time with an A10-7xxx,they are gonna O/C it to oblivion,both cpu and igpu, and sell it with an optional watercooler.

Meh, you can passively cool multiple 200-300W dGPUs in a 1U rack server just fine with big fans. Not really an interesting problem. If they push it into the consumer space it gets a bit trickier (due to the appalling design of ATX and its derivatives), but they already sold a 220W CPU with a watercooler.
 
It is ok for some people here when Intel talks about Tick-Tocks but when AMD reveals a 2 year cadence for new GPU architecture for the next 10 years, its blurry with ectoplasm, Aprils fool etc etc. 🙄

It is ok for some people here when Intel talks about Tick-Tocks but when AMD reveals a 2 year cadence for new GPU architecture for the next 10 years, its blurry with ectoplasm, Aprils fool etc etc. 🙄

Except the "next 10 years" is only 5. And I wasn't going to criticize the AMD slide, per se, but if you want to go there, it *is* blurry, and looks like it was made by a high school student. Even the vertical arrow that serves as the y axis on the first slide is not aligned properly with the edge of the slide. I cant imagine a top executive at a major company giving a presentation using a slide that is either out of date or can't tell how many years it is until 2020.

It is the angle of the Photograph, the person that took the photograph is sitting lower than the slides.

For the rest the thread is filled with "opinions" of people fearfull of AMD releasing competitive products..
 
I wouldn't mind a 300W APU. If you look at the combined power draw of CPU + dGPU on many PCs, 300W is nothing. Any APU with a power draw like that is going to have a metric ton of GCN cores in it.

About the only thing wrong with 300W APU is that it probably means an end to HSF compatibility stretching from AM2 all the way to FM2+. The die on that thing will be huge, and so will the IHS. It'll take a lot of power pins from the socket, too.
 
Yeah, since this a product a bit into the future, what is most likely is a combination of Zen CPU cores + a huge number of AMDs latest GPU cores + extremely fast HBM memory on die, all at 14 nm or later node. It can be a really sweet chip. And since Intel does not have as efficient GPU cores, it's a market segment AMD can dominate now that HBM enables very large APUs.

Funny to expect AMD to launch future HPC products with their paltry R&D budget in the future when they are barely competitive today with Nvidia. Maxwell eats GCN for breakfast in terms of performance/watt.

Well, that's what the article is saying. Do you have some better source of inside info, and in that case what? Or are you just trying to destroy the thread as usual when AMD is being discussed?

Sorry, I didn't know that point out two simple facts are equivalent to destroy the thread. What should I say to keep the tread and your dreams intact? AMD is great and the BoD really knows what they are doing?
