It doesn't help me none though, I still have to pay an arm and a leg for last years performance and directx 11.

Why do you have a condescending opinion about anything AMD? I bet if it was something like "nVidia increases market share to 70%" your response would be "ha so much for Fermi being a failure." Fanboy.

arm and a leg? you see, nvidia still has the higher price than AMD... i am sure you would still be bitching if AMD sold 5870 for $100

Yes, I think happy's posts can be appropriatly flagged by most of us by now.

I was surprised to read about this marketshare gain for AMD. I prefer the direction AMD has taken with thier discreet graphics cards much more than what nVidia has been doing, but this is the first definitive report i've seen showing that a lot of others share the same viewpoint. I read a lot of conflicting reports on this kind of data though, so i'm interested to see other reports that have time to take into consideration Fermi's launch.

And 18% of the steam survey takers report having only one CPU in April of 2010. Should we infer that the pentium 4 is still a very hot seller?

Yes, there are still a buttload of people playing Valve games with an 8600 or 8800. I'm one of those people. Absolutely irrelevant to the topic though.

In fact, if you sort by % change you can see the top % gainers are the 5700 and 5800 series. Which supports the OP instead of undermining it as your cough would seem to imply. But seeing as other big winners are the NV 9500 and 220 I'd say the data is completely meaningless.

Don't forget those 4 or so million CS players who refuse to upgrade. When does steam know you have upgraded anyway?

I heard that Steam usually links the user with his/her system specs, and if the user changed it, it will be updated, plus I think that an user that haven't logged for a long time, his/her specs will not be added in the database. Steam will never be 100% accurate, but like I said before, is a very good approximation of what's going on in there. Seems that ATi needed the HD 4800 to boost their image, so users could embrace whatever would come first, specially a brand new card with new DX11 support, etc, etc. nVidia did well with their GTX 2x0 series but not enough to instigate users to get the GTX 4x0 with their issues. But at least both major players being in half will means that;

1) Better competition

2) Price fixation :awe:

Let us look at the numbers again:
http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/videocard/

ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series -3.21% from last month.
ATI Radeon HD 5900 Series +0.27% from last month.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470 +0.64% from last month.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 +0.44% from last month.

hws_stats_hr_white.gif

And we are talking about 3.29%...which is the number of DX11 systems.
53.18% is the number of DX10 systems.

It would have been rather strange if nvidia would't atleast have taken something out of ATI's 100% marketshare of DX11 cards, Fermi aint that bad.

Take a look at all the cards, ATI's 5700 and 5800 series have gained there.

And @ cganesh75, Meghan54, attic, magicman ,and the rest of you fanboys. :) :)

Where do you see me saying anything condesending about AMD in my statement?
Please tell me ,whats codesending?

My point was no matter how much market share AMD OR Nividia has............WHERE ARE THE GOOD MID RANGE CARDS at descent prices?
In fact give us some price drops ANYONE, Nvidia or AMD.

Nice there both making good profits, but yet prices suck.

We have the slow 5770 @ 4890 prices or the 300$/350$ 5850/gtx470. Crap and more crap.
We need a good 225$ card, screw there market share.
Hey I'm on your side. :)

Now look at these numbers, from the exact same DX11 category your % drops in ATi series came:

ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series 43.46%
ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series 41.85%
ATI Radeon HD 5900 Series 3.21%
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470 0.65%
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 0.44%

So it quite easy to understand the % drops in DX 11 category - After all ATi had 100% in March and now only has like 98.91% of DX11 GPUs. There are THREE TIMES MORE of those elusive 5970 than 470+480! I expect to see even more ATI drops in the next months!

But now lets look at overall picture (all GPUs):

DirectX 11 GPUs 5.58% +1.29%
DirectX 10 GPUs 74.47% +0.23%

ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series 2.43% +0.52%
ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series 2.34% +0.41%
ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series 8.30% -0.13%

As you can see the 5700+5800 got half of the 4850+4870+4890 in six months.

Now lets look at the overall share of the last gen competition to the 5850+5870 (it is a bit hard to compare the 5750/5770, because the first is more a GTS250/9800GTX competitor, while the 5770 is more a GTX260 competitor).

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 3.94% +0.10%
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 275 1.22% +0.01%
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 1.17% +0.04%
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280 0.86% 0.00%

It seems the 5700, the 5800 and the 5900 series have been enjoying a nice time with no competition to sell really well.

I'm pretty sure market share accounts for sale volume within an alloted amount of time, in this case the more recent round of gpus (late 2009-2010). That would mean all the old Nvidia 8800s and 9800s, which are great cards in their own right, can't be counted as they were part of a statistical graph from a year or two ago. If you just look at DX11 sales on your provided link you see that the ATI 5800 series completely owns the Nvidia 480/470, not to mention the ati 4800s still looking strong in the DX10 category.

I wasn't sure what you were trying to pull out from this information.

What's funny is that the GTX 4xx series couldn't be in the red. It came out in April and the stats are for April so him showing them in the green is funny cus it's impossible for it to drop when they had just come out.

This is true. NVIDIA has put out some great cards with the GTX 2xx and GTX 4xx cards, but they haven't won hearts and minds since the 88xx series. ATI has capitalized well on their window of opportunity. I don't really see how anyone can dispute that.
