According to Microsoft OEM pricing information -- a screen capture of which is embedded above in this post -- Windows 8.1 with Bing is listed at $10 per copy for "small" Intel-based tablets under nine inches in screen size. But after a "configuration discount," of $10, OEMs get that SKU for those tablets for free. For tablets with screen sizes of smaller (not greater, as I originally mistyped) than or equal to 10.1 inches, the Windows 8.1 with Bing SKU is listed at $25 per copy, with the same $10 "configuration discount," resulting in a $15 per copy cost for OEMs.

The kicker is that the discount is offered only for Intel-based tablets, and this might be the reason why most OEMs rely on Intel’s chipsets, and why Windows slates powered by AMD’s application processors are almost nonexistent.

The article is based on a ZDNet article which says it's based on an image which doesn't contain the word Intel. The cited source, which is that screencap doesn't have the word Intel anywhere. The context of the word Intel is thus unclear whether it's Intel only, x86, or Intel as an example of x86 pricing. Gotta follow the sourcing chain for stuff like that.

Considering that the big reason to encourage making devices with windows Intel also applies to other x86, it seems that the latter two options are distinct possibilities.
 
I wouldn't be surprised if they consider x86 much more saleable because "is a windows computer if you need it to be" is a pretty good sales point for a tablet/convertible even if it doesn't get used a bunch and are focusing harder on promoting it for that reason.

If it is cheap enough to produce, then it would work for me and most likely a lot of other people as well. And I can't imagine a hexcore SR with small iGPU being thermally constrained on FM2+.

If Zen ends up being a primarily "optimized for mobile" cpu design (or is late) then I hope AMD has taken (or is taking) precautions to keep desktop alive.

And by alive, I mean not only having good (by AMD standards) desktop cpu performance, but also having a relatively small die size as well (relative to the cpu). This way AMD has a better cost structure and can keep it going for a relatively long period (if needed).

Any updates on Carrizo-L? (I did a search in this thread for "Carrizo-L" but it ended up being too non-specific).

What size iGPU do folks expect that one will have? (Since Carrizo-L is sharing the same BGA socket as Carrizo I am wondering if AMD increased iGPU size or not relative to AM1?)

The article explained what the configuration discount was.

You're really stretching here. There is zero chance that Microsoft is "subsidizing" x86 more than RT. x86 makes money, RT doesn't.

personally i dont see any reason for MS to subsidized x86 more than RT
since for MS as long as it windows, they would make money

What if Carrizo for the desktop is going to require a totally different socket and AMD knows this? Do you think they are going to reveal this info and kill a large part of their current market of FM2 and AM3+ customers who would rather hold off buying A10 and FX processors waiting for the next great thing?

Just a thought

Still think it's a victim of the budget cuts. If they can't even do a 65 W BGA model, perhaps there are max clock speed issues as well.

I think Microsoft will change their business model in the future, more focused towards subscription services like Office 365 than with licensing revenue like acquiring new windows.

Microsoft needs to change their platform business model, and they won't be able to gather partners for it if most of their user base is stuck into old, crusty versions of their software. Windows XP was a wake up call for them, and Windows 7 has all the potential to become an even worse migration nightmare for them.

IMO Windows on ARM is toast, because the only reason for someone to accept Microsoft total control and asinine UI design is if someone needs Windows software, and they are mostly x86 software. The "touch" user has already moved to Apple or Android.

It won't be cheap to produce or R&D, especially given the temporal context right now. Unless AMD starting planning a chip like that a long time ago there is no way it's going to happen. R&D and the engineering required is a long process. Starting from the drawing board now doesn't make any sense either.

It's unfortunate seeing FM2+ being abandoned so fast for new products (Carrizo ect.) 🙁 Maybe we'll see some interesting Kaveri refreshes but I doubt one of them will be a 3 module SR. R&D, cost issues aside, it would undercut their FX line and the benefits of a mature, albeit uncompetitive, process.

I dont think so,

I believe Desktop Carrizo will be released 6 months after Mobile Carrizo, which is the exact opposite that happened with Kaveri. Remember Desktop Kaveri was released in January 2014 with Mobile Kaveri released 6 months later in June 2014.

I expect something like that as well. AMD did not flat out denied that Carrizo will hit the desktop, their wording sounded to me as If they carefully blurred the waters in order to get rid of inventory.

MS recently relieved that windows RT tablets (eg surface 2) will not get windows 10. So Windows RT is officially dead.

But MS just can't escape bad branding. Windows Phone will be rebranded simply Windows 10. But contrary to previous rumors it seems little changed from windows phone 8.1(from what they've shown so far).
