AMD Breaks 8GHz Overclock with Upcoming FX Processor, Sets World Record.

The reason we have so many Bulldozer threads, is because BD will be a multi threading monster! 😀

Seriously though, it would be better if we didn't start threads that have the same topic as the thread a couple places lower. This will overflow the cache man.

Sandys problem is the locked max multy that's hard coded into the chips.lets see how long amd keeps this record when the unlocked blcks comes out on sandy e.

What's sandys max multy? 57

56x currently...

but pushing 1.7Vcore on the cpu and having it draw almost 300W translates into a TON of amps per pin on 1155pins.

SB-E has 2011 pins to spread that out... so im figuring they will clock better then the 1155, and be more durable.

But performance wise, its not going to be something ur going to lose sleep over not having.

Heck Ill take a 4.5Ghz version,,, I dont need all that Mhz lol I need threads for audio production. Actually I don't but it would be nice to have some extra cores if I decide to watch a movie 10 of them at once,, in little winamp screens... thx

Brian and Sami mentioned doing 5Ghz on air running fully multi-threaded benchmarks.

That, also, has been reported before. But it bears repeating, think.

I just wish they mentioned voltage and how many chips they had to try out before they came across one that'd do 5GHz.

We know the demo 4.8ghz rig with the Antec Kuhler 920 was running at 1.5v. Extrapolate from there. The article below answers the how many chips question.

NordicHardware: "It says you reached frequencies "well above 5 GHz" with only air and sub-$100 water cooling solutions. Mind going more into detail about your ventures on air and water?"
Sami Mäkinen: "In terms of CPUZ MHz I’ve seen virtually every CPU reach over 5GHz when using a good air/watercooler. I believe the highest result I saw with aircooling was around 5.5GHz CPUZ. This CPU hit around 7.8GHz on LN2."

NordicHardware: "Also are these 5+ GHz frequencies that could be achieved by people looking for a 24/7 overclock on air or water cooling solutions?"
Sami Mäkinen: "There is obviously a delta between “CPUZ MHz” and “24/7 MHz” and overclocking is never guaranteed. But getting close to 5GHz (or even above) on good cooling solutions seems to be possible. Every CPU is different so your mileage can vary."

picked this up off the amd site, encouraging news for the fx bulldozer, hopefully it will trickle down to the desktop fx-

A longtime favorite of performance enthusiasts and overclockers around the world, AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced it has achieved the Guinness World Record for the “Highest Frequency of a Computer Processor,” by overclocking the upcoming 8-core AMD FX desktop processor.

“The record-breaking processor speed that resides in the AMD FX CPU clearly demonstrates performance gains for the new AMD ‘Bulldozer’ multi-core architecture, which will provide x86 computing power for this CPU and future AMD Accelerated Processing Units,” said Chris Cloran, corporate vice president and general manager, Client Group at AMD. “Along with world-record frequencies, the AMD FX processor will enable an unrivaled enthusiast PC experience for the money – extreme multi-display gaming, mega-tasking and HD content creation.”

The AMD FX CPU, set to launch in the fourth quarter of 2011, achieved a top speed of 8.429 GHz, surpassing the previous record of 8.308 GHz. The record was set on Aug. 31, 2011, in Austin, Texas, by “Team AMD FX,” a group comprised of elite overclocking specialists working alongside top AMD technologists, who will also be named in the Guinness World Records.

“We applaud AMD for their entry into Guinness World Records® for achieving the Highest Frequency of a Computer Processor,” said Freddie Hoff, adjudicator for Guinness World Records, who is presenting the award today at the AMD Fusion Zone, a technology showcase in San Francisco, Calif. “We congratulate everyone involved in this record-breaking achievement.”

The record marks another accomplishment in the storied history of the FX brand, which represents amazing, unrestrained PC experiences that users can see and feel. All FX branded products, including the upcoming AMD FX CPU, will offer completely unlocked processor clock multipliers for easier PC enthusiast overclocking, and include exclusive AMD software through the AMD VISION Engine to fine-tune system performance. For FX branded processors, AMD has removed all the stops to enable a fully unlocked experience, giving overclockers and PC enthusiasts complete customization and flexibility.
