So, found this dinosaur in the junk pile at one of our labs. Assuming it still works, what can I do with it?

Open it up and learn about how CPUs are put together.

That is POS it wont run anything and be slow........

Your better off first getting a SSD ,,,,,,, then CPU upgrade,,, thx gl

Thunderbird cores were not good at anything except space heating.

I'm pretty sure it's lower heat output than modern CPUs, making it even mediocre at space heating.

Sure, compared to other CPUs of that era, heat output was high, but Pentium IIIs topped out somewhere around 40W, while the high end of current CPUs are over double that TDP.

I have a small collection of Athlon XPs and pentium 4s. Keep it because it's mildly cool I guess? It's not worth much. Would make a nice keychain piece if you drill a hole in it. Or just take it apart for shits.

Ah, good times. I remember building my 1Ghz T-Bird rig and overclocking it to 1.2Ghz. I thought I was pretty bad ass. :D

The guy who said Thunderbird cores weren't good for their time obviously lived in a hole somewhere. They were very strong competitors.

The 1 GHz chips ran at 1.4 GHz easily with decent cooling at a time when an extra 400 MHz made a substantial difference.

I do have to admit- Thunderbird was a damn cool codename. Beats the hell out of "Vishera" and "Zambezi".

I had a T-Bird 1.2 GHz and a Soltek Motherboard

I thought it was the best thing ever.

My father, at the time, thought I was nuts for going AMD... Kept bring up my previous K6/2 450 Machine as an example. (Dad had a Pentium 233 MMx at the time I had the K6/2 and they were probably about even if I remember right despite the MHz difference)

The T-Bird eat his P III though

I've actually run AMD Processors my whole life in my desktops other than my 2500k system I recently sold. (had a 1090T, then 1045T, than 940 before that) Not a fan of either, I just generally buy AMD I guess. Or I'm stupid.

That was a uber-chip for it time. I wanted one But I couldn't afford to pay for the extra power
so I went with good 'ole Coppermine 566Mhz Celeron overclocked to 849MHz.

I would have rather had the Thunderbird 1GHz.

I remember those, got one in my first order from Newegg.

Probably would run Windows XP just fine if the motherboard hasn't blown its caps.
