Where did all these higher end 939 CPUs come from? Every place had been out of them for almost 10 months.

Haven't they been out of production for a while now? My guess is that they won't be around for very long...if anyone wants one of these, now is definitely the time to upgrade. (I already did last month. :))

is it worth upgrading form a 3800+?? I bought one of those awhile back but hadn't installed it yet. This is real tempting. I thought I might OC the 3800+

Yep. I'm pretty sure the code isn't good 'till you get your first newsletter.

I went from a 3800 to an X2 4800 about a year ago. The speed increase was slightly noticeable, but going from one core to two.....priceless.

I'll be stepping up from the x2 3800 to the x2 4200 so we'll see if it was worth it or not. I have another machine that could benefit from the x2 3800 so I was in the market for another chip anyway, might as well give the main rig a small step if anything.

Sorry, I wasn't clear, I bought two 3800+ X2's a couple of months ago. :) Got one in my HTPC box ( nice) and was going to put the other one in my main box. I am betting that the difference between the 3800 x2 and 4200 isn't noticeable, especially if I overclock to that speed :)

Damn these deals!!

They always get me thinking...well if I upgrade the CPU might as well upgrade the mobo, and if I upgrade the mobo might as well upgrade the video card....

Curse you OP!

I'm in for one. Don't feel like upgrading the whole system right now.

Currently running a 3700+ single core at 2.5, I'm hoping this dual core chip will likewise run at 2.5. Anyone care to speculate on a reasonable overclock on one of these chips?

When I picked up two 939 X2 3800+ about 3 months ago, I found they both hit 2.6Ghz with stock coolers and an increase in voltage. I put the Tuniq Tower on my dad's machine, increased voltage and he is running his 3800+ @ 2.8Ghz.

I would imagine these chips would overclock the same or better. So, you can certainly expect 2.5Ghz, and I am guessing you may even be able to hi 3Ghz depending on the cooler you are using.

Got a good cooler - XP 120. I'm going to crank up that bad boy and give it a go. 2.8 would be killer as long as it's stable. At any rate, hoping to put off the next upgrade for a year or so.

I've been looking at a cheap upgrade for my PC which is a 2.6 P4 with AGP and DDR ram...would this CPU be a worthwhile upgrade? Also, does anyone know of a cheap but good mobo that will use DDR and AGP with this CPU?

probably not, maybe if you have 2 x 1gb pc3200 ram and a X850XT or faster AGP video card, the problem is socket 939 board run about $60.00 to $100.00.

and you could pick up A ASRock 4CoreDual-SATA2 LGA 775 board for like $66.00 and a E2140 for $70.00

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813157115

www.clubit.com has a e2140 for like $70.00

stock the AMD and intel system are very colse in peformance, but overclocked the E2140 will way outperform the X2 4200+. and give you a much better upgrade path in the future.

I pulled the trigger too. Will be upgrading from a overclocked Venice 3000+ (2.4GHz) to this new one. Hope Negg ship that boy soon enough. On a sidenote, does anyone knows teh difference of this one with the one in Toledo core?

I'm considering this little upgrade, too, but I'm not sure if it's worth it when I am currently running a Venice 3200.

Anand spelled out the difference between the Toledo and Manchester cores back in August of 2005 when Toledo was introduced. Click here for the article.

As many of you have correctly pointed out, the 4200+ and 4600+ were available as both Toledo and Manchester cores. More than half of the Athlon 64 X2's transistor count is spent on cache, which means that if there are going to be any manufacturing defects on the chip, they will more than likely occur in the processor's cache. Born out of that fact, the Toledo based Athlon 64 X2 4600+ and 4200+ were nothing more than 4800/4400+ X2s with too many manufacturing defects; instead of throwing the bad cores away, AMD simply rebranded them and sold them at lower price points. The problem with this approach is that an Athlon 64 X2 4200+ took the same amount of space on a wafer as an Athlon 64 X2 4800+, despite only having half the cache. Thus we have the Manchester core: a core designed from the ground up to only feature a 512KB L2 cache per core.

I have the same question..

What is the difference between the Toledo and the Manchester (besides one is in Spain (or Ohio) and one is in England!) Core ?

I guess I could dig around AMD.com and read through tons of white papers, but I hope one of you folks can answer in a sentence or two...
