I couldn't even tell you the last time we sold a non-intel server at my data center. we keep a small stock of HP DL365's and DL385's and thy gather dust.

kinda sucks... I still use AMD on my desktop and don't plan on switching over to intel any time soon.

Taking two shit companies and combining them is a terrible idea. It's not 3+3=6, it's 3x3=9.

75% of all mergers fail to deliver any stockholder value.

I still think it's a little too early to tell what it will be like five/ten years from now. I don't think anyone really thought that AMD/ATI would do great from the start.

Agreed. I also didn't think AMD/ATI merger was a great idea, but what is done is done. Right now, I think they are doing decent with the merger. ATI is back on track with good, competitive products. AMD is making good integrated solution in both desktop and laptop using ATI technology. The only problem right now is their cpu, and that is a problem with their architecture and strategy, which was decided way before the merger. What they need to do is cut cost, do everything to maximize their average selling price, and make their manufacturing more efficient so they can compete on price until they come out with better products.

If they can do all that, at least break even and have some what decent cash flow, their stock is actually attractive. With both CPU and Graphic unit, AMD is only valued at half of Nvidia, which is mostly only graphic. (even after nvidia's big drop today)

Well, a week later and lets see the answer to that question. Hmm, AMD is at 4.89 a share at the moment. If you bought last week, you would have lost nearly 8% of your money.

AMD is at a 6 year low, and is nearly at a ~16 year low. AMD has no really good news at the moment. Don't catch this falling knife. However, it is getting more and more tempting. If AMD has some good news and a nice bounce, then maybe consider buying it.

There are a LOT of companies (in all sectors) that are hitting X year lows.

I've lost a lot of money (on paper) over the past year....all I can do now is hold and wait, and wait, and wait....*Sigh*

you think? i can't recall that many manufacturers use AMD CPU's.

in the corporate world, i'd say a work station with an AMD CPU is almost non-existent.

If I had alot of I/O there is no beating Opterons scalibility and bandwidth, but you can't live off the few companies that have that.

I tried to push for AMD desktops but my boss's never want to hear it.

forgot to mention, picked up AMD stock when it was in teh 20's, wishing I woudl have sold when it was in the 40's.

I'm waiting for Chapter "whatever" bankruptcy. Don't think I can forgive them or ATI for selling out (i.e. un-Canadianing themselves). Oh, and I have complete faith in Nvidia and Intel now.

If you're thinking of buying a chip company, make it INTC. They have a solid roadmap, proven ability to execute, great partners and a huge opportunity with WIMAX.

LOL, I thought the same thing when I bought it at 20 and finally stopped out at 17 (thank goodness for that loss - it could have been far worse).

So solid that their stock price is stuck in the 20's, with an occasional dip into to the teens.

I own some and it's frustrating as with all other stocks in the market today.

Bout fricking time they punted him. What a waste of money that guy was. Now they need to divest of ATI. That or put some real business people in charge and set the company straight.

microprocessor companies are as follows:
Intel
IBM <= face it they are competitors
AMD

I'm sure the list could b expanded. Learn about the investment concept called "barrier to entry" and realize that most tech companies are not sound investments. The bst anyone can do is speculate.

Barrier to Entry is a ery real concept and it is the tip of the ice berg regarding smart investing.

In the near future, CPUs and GPUs will be on hte same chip. ATI + AMD makes 100% logical sense. Remember math co-processers?

Well, he did do well in the beginning when he first came on board as CEO. I agree though that his execution fell short thereafter in turning the company in the right direction.
