Wish Fry's would open some stores here on the East coast, or maybe just start offering the same deals through Outpost.com.

Did you check to see if the jumper was on CLEAR CMOS? I had an issue with mine that it was set this way from the factory.. I switched the jumper and i worked great.

Frys is a ~40 mile round trip from me, and I don't have time to make the trip today (especially after fscking with this system all morning).

I did check all the jumpers. Thanks for the suggestion though. I tried that along with clearing the CMOS, trying to boot at different FSB's, reseating cards and RAM, tried using different RAM, a different CPU, and even a different power supply. It's definitely a DOA mobo.
I'll try taking it back tomorrow, hopefully they'll still have some in stock.

no, its true, me and my friends got several on black friday. and even after, it only went up 10 dollars.

it was a palomino with a non pro board:p i know when i bought it. i later bought another xp 2000+ combo for 69 dollars months later but got a highly overclockable chip by that time. they would flux between 1800 and 2000+ every other week at the same price. i've personally bought 3 of these combos for 59/69/69.

I couldn't pass up a $50 combo, I know I'm a sucker for an excellant value. I want to squeeze the free Mhz out of it. If it cooks, well I guess that's $50 I should have spent on a better combo, lol. Thanks for the O/C info. Is setting the FSB to 166 the quickest esiest/ safest way to O/C this one? Tia.:sun:

yes, effectively giving you 12 x 166.666666 = 2000mhz (probably the equivalent of a 2200+<~>2300+) just make sure its a "B" :)

2000+ combo for $59 on BF last year was a 2000+ palomino w/ a k7s5a (non pro). if you're running all these frys cpu combos at stock speeds its not gonna make a difference. the thorton combos which were slightly higher had more o/c potential + came w/ k7vta3 (which is a great mobo, much better than the sis735 series)

edit: just went to FV frys, got an "A" stepping :( :( :( (needless today, it didnt do 166)

LOL. Don't listen to the Fry's salespeople. Most of them know nothing. Of course the motherboard works with WinXP. If you ever have any doubt about information they give you, just look it up on the manufacturer's product page.

The Duron 1.8GHz/K7VTA3 v8.0c I built went 100% smoothly with WinXP. I have a Fry's BF $29.99AR Radeon 9100 128MB AGP card in it now, too. It's a sweet, cheap system: FAR 256MB memory, $5 AR 350W PSU, old case, $59.99 combo and $30AR 9100.

I also picked up this mobo in a combo with a 2400+, and the mobo seems to be DOA. It doesn't post at all, and I swapped every component out with a working one. Will be returning tomorrow for a new board, which according to Fry's is no problem....Still a sweet deal IMO!

i got one of these combos from the woodland hills fry's for a friend. initial board i got had a faulty floppy disk controller and serial port, so i had to exchange it. the 2nd one worked great, not a bad deal on this combo except for having to exchange mb's and driving. i have bought 6 ecs combos in the last few months for budget systems and had to exchange 3 of those mb's.....so far a 50% ratio. no complaints thus far if the board works tho.

I got a version 8.0C over the Thanksgiving holiday from Fry's for my nephew. There were a couple of odd problems:

1. Power LED did not work

2. Disabling QuickPOST didn't do anything. It still did a quick post .

3. Having two cdroms on the secondary IDE caused the systemn to not POST. If I swapped primary and secondary, it would work though. Wierd.

4. No beep when you power on.

I checked ECS's site for a bios update but they don't even have a download page for version 8.x. Its a fairly recent rev which I would guess is the reason for the problems some people like myself have been having. I might get a new board if ECS support doesn't answer my support inquiry soon. I noticed there were a lot of returned K7VTA3s in the motherboard section. Still a great deal though.

Thanks AkumaX, That's useful info for me. The Anaheim store gave me a MIXHB 0340MPMW. I assume this is "B" stepping. What week is it? 40? Tia.

You do realize that tax and shipping easily raises the price over $60?

I will pay $60.00 to have the combo shipped.
Heck it should really only cost about $5.00 to ship.
I recently shipped a mb\CPu\ram\AGP Video Card\NIC combo for about $5.00 shipping and handling via USPS.

Now when I chucked in a harddrive on the exact same combo to another person, it took it up to $9.00 s/h.
