AMD 1.6 GHz Duron/mobo, Fry's: how hot @ $50?

I bought the Duron 1.8GHz/motherboard combo last week on BF. It's a pretty fast combo for the money. Read anandtech's review on the main page to see how a Duron 1.6GHz performs.

The Duron I received is a 1.5v core and came multiplier unlocked.

One question: if you need a fast general system, why are you only now going to buy the cheapest combo available? :p It's not like faster combos haven't been available at Fry's forever for $20-$30 more. The $79 Athlon XP 2400+ is a lot faster than this 1.6GHz combo and the $109 Barton combo (with a better motherboard) was even faster than the $79 XP 2400+ combo.

Yeh, I read the Budget CPU article--that's what made me think seriously about this combo. I know it's a little lightweight in absolute terms, but I just need to keep costs down; I've been running a 400 MHz Celeron for a couple of years now, and at this price I think I can upgrade and still keep peace in the family... maybe.

You might have to upgrade your power supply if it's as old as your CPU. :p

If you have 10-12A on 12v, at least 15A on 3.3v and 20A on 5V (typical for a 250W PSU... combined on 3.3v and 5v rails may be around 150W), it will probably be fine. It will probably also work if it's a high quality 200W PSU.

Ok guys I do have a question..... would this be worth the upgrade for me??

I have an athlon 700mhz oced to 800mhz, 512 MB pc133 sdram and geforce 3ti200 on the Epox 8kta3 board with a wd SE 80GB hdd.

Last week I bought a geforce fx5600 ultra, a wd 160 GB and 512 MB pc3200 DDR memory. I have been looking for a moderately cheap board to stick these puppies in. would this be a worthy upgrade from what I have????

Yes! With a small bump in core voltage and half-way decent cooling, you should be able to easily run 12 x 166MHz FSB = 2GHz with that CPU. If you're feeling adventurous, you can even try enabling the full 256KB of L2 cache. The motherboard that comes with the combo supports core voltage tweaking and FSB speed overclocking (plus jumpers to set the default FSB speed... 200/266/333).

The motherboard doesn't support 400MHz FSB, so your PC3200 memory is a little bit overkill. You may be able to run the memory at PC2700 speed with more agressive timings (CL2.0-3-3-4, for example).

Your upgrades looks like a partial list of Fry's BF deals. :p

Okay, I officially hate Fry's. Why? Because if they were in my area, they would continually eat away at my life savings. Since they aren't in my area, I have nothing but to sit here and rant and rave at the deals that I miss out on. Bastards.

Call up the sunnyvale store, if they have this combo they will probably ship it to you for less than what tax cost's us :)

This board has a Via KT333 chipset so it's DDR only.

But the Fry's in Wilsonville, OR has 512MB PC3200 for $59 after MIR (check your local Frys).

So for only ~$110 bucks, you could have a pretty damn good system.
And if you're into overclocking, this board supports it and 166 FSB. Turn the FSB up to 166 (and I bet this Duron will OC well) and you could easily hit 2.0GHz without even unlocking the multi.

IMO, this deal is HOT as hell. I'm picking one up this evening to finally upgrade my GF's rig.

Great deal for only$49.99! Might have to get this even though BF emptied my wallet big time, but for $50 what the heck.

I don't think that's a good idea unless you can put up with 64KB L2 cache. There's no guarantee that the rest of the cache will work if you're able to unlock it.

The Thorton Athlon you have is much faster. The Duron is pretty fast for the price, but a $65 Thorton combo is a very good deal, too.

my thorton couldn't be modded to 512k cache too :( sucks! :p

its definitely a good deal for you. the board is 333 bus capable, so when say 2500 or 2600 bartons are on clearance some time down the line, you could even upgrade to that.

I just picked up a combo at the Woodland Hills store and got a green PCB Duron, MIWGA stepping 0346 date code. That's a pretty recent date and I don't even see any information online about that stepping. Stupid Dell and Fry's always sell new stuff that I can't look up. :p

In light of the AnandTech article on front page, it's kind of fitting that I returned a Celeron 2.5GHz combo to buy this one and save $30 + tax, too.

Many people have been able to enable the cache on the Applebred, make sure you get a stepping with a B at the end (MIXIB AND MIUHB are typical) and that its from from about 36/37 or below (I may be wrong on the weeks, those are approximate). AMD has started locking all their chips other than 64 bit recently and no one can overcome it, I just thought I bought a Duron MIXIB that I could oc to 2-2.3 GHZ on air, but they sent me a week 42 one, which was locked. But they gave me money back for the chip so I kept it, I can still run the FSB at 200 mhz if I picked my ram chips shrewdly enough.
