Haven't watched, but the "woke" shit(if it exists) pisses me off. Seems like the new trend is to cram as many "others" as possible into a story. Content doesn't matter as long as we check an item off on the progressive list. I'm thinking specifically of Discovery here. We got the lesbian. the gay couple, the fatty, and the wtfs *all on one ship*! It's beggars belief. Any one or two adds color, but it's clearly obvious they're just checking off boxes. It comes off as artificial, and as covert propaganda or something... They're clearly in another world. They need to get away from Hollywood, and see the way the rest of us live.

This only rises to the level of "annoying" far as I'm concerned but I know what you mean.

o_O

The only thing that REALLY bugs me about "political correctness" (a more accurate description of "woke" IMO) in entertainment is that some of the absolute best material for teaching the IRL impact of bigotry like "All in the Family" or "Roots" could never be made today and that sucks.

Where I live it's exactly like that. Extremely diverse. But then again I don't live in racist bigoted white nationalist conservative land. Thank fucking God.

I got the fuck out of the vanilla burb land as fast as possible, even though I'm in northern Jersey where the white burbs are relatively sane compared to South of the mason Dixon line and the flyover states hell.

Shit on the subway ride I just took I was probably in the minority as a white male. I wasn't scared! I also have gay married friends! Oh the horror their reality is now represented in some media.

I like how the shitty people don't mind pointing themselves out these days.

Is that a reference to me? I'd be more than willing to take a drive up to that shithole you call home and discuss it in person.
Come on down. Your heart will probably explode from the diversity and gays holding hands in public.

The reason 'woke' shit bothers people like you is because diversity had virtually no representation at all before. And now that you're straight white body perfect world of entertainment is changing, it bothers you.

Zero fucks given

Woke shit bothers me cause it's a check on a box, and unrelated to merit. Like that jackass they had in the Nuclear Energy Office. A trivial background check should have disqualified him for a public facing position, and probably any important position considering his loose play with the truth. He was hired for looks, not merit. That's what I have a problem with.

I give zero fucks what people do on their own time, and queers don't bother me in the least. You're projecting. You're self righteous Social Warrior™ that makes up stories and crafts backstories for your dastardly opponents so you can feel good about your completely average, and unremarkable life. When you're gone, it'll go mostly unnoticed, and will not be commented on. Same as me, same as most people. Get used to your place in life, and most of all, get a grip.

Ahhh now you're projecting even harder. Never did I say I was special. I know exactly that I am a nobody that only his family and a few friends will notice when I am gone from this earth. I'm quite ok with that. So it seems like you are projecting there. It's ok. Just watch straight white people shows and you'll feel better about yourself.

What I said was special is about what is around me. I wrote it clear as day.

What is special is that what the world is made of is all around me, and it's a blessing to be in it, instead of being an isolated ignoramus like people that bug out because they're a few black characters on a completely imaginary fantasy tv show, and God forbid there is a tough yet bitchy female lead. It's too much. Never mind how many dickhead gruff tough guy leading roles there have been in entertainment over the years that people have loved. Countless.

You may say you don't care what people do, like the gays, except don't get into YOUR entertainment world. Which you just said. So you are full of shit with your 'acceptance' speech. You can't even accept something other than straight white entertainment norms on your own fucking TV. Bigly sad. That's not accepting in the slightest. You know, do your thing, just don't let it seep into my world much at all, especially not in my entertainment.

Your claim is it bugs you because of checking off a box, and indeed, sometimes it is checking off a box, because those in charge have literally neglected those people for centuries. They need a literal fucking check box to remember that, oh shit, other people exist and live lives, that don't look like what people like you are only comfortable with seeing, and that's a problem that needs fixing. They need a damn box to figure that out sometimes.

Also bigly sad.

Jesus christ this thread detailed. Just shut the fuck up.

I liked the show a lot, I thought the cinematography was great, the visual representation of things like Moria was fantastic, I enjoyed most of the characters, and without knowing all of the Sim still felt like I could pick up some of the "bigger picture"

But it didn't bother you there were a few black characters and a tough bitchy female protagonist?

You woke motherfucker!

I've just watched episode 5 of RoP. I'm really enjoying the series so far. The writers have no problem taking their time and steadily setting the scene, acquainting people with that universe. I think they understand Tolkien's style and are seeking to replicate it.

I still can't believe the colors! I have a non-HDR set & it looks ridiculously good even on my cheapo Black Friday TV lol.

That's about the only good thing about it.

A lot of shows suffer from pacing issues. Mandalorian & especially the Book of Fett are two examples. Like, LOTR was pretty solid, but the Hobbit got stretched across 3 movies...but got fixed with the Tolkein Edit: (single 4-hour movie cut)

Isn't the obesity rate in America something like 1 in 3 these days?

I think your opinion comes down to more of a question of what you've been exposed to that dictates your opinion of 'realism'. Example: I started my career in London, IT sector. I now live in the sticks up north. The demographic differences probably outweigh the similarities (e.g. where I live, a month can go by before I see another non-white person). If I went to a birthday party of one of my 'down south' tech friends, one could probably have to try hard to find a more diverse yet like-minded group of people ( / various degrees of super-nerds), including waaaaay more than our fair share of 'unusual' health disorders. I have Crohn's disease for example, and up north I'd likely have to go to a meeting of people with inflammatory bowel disorders to find more than one in one place. If the party were considered to be a definitive demographic measure, diseases like Crohn's would be considered commonplace rather than rare.

Aboard a starship in the ST universe I'd expect to find such concentrations of super-nerds and the diversity that goes with it, when the main thing that brings them together is intellect.

To be fair poverty-stricken "fatties" NEVER actually existed back in the day here in our world either since to be fat you generally need EXCESS FOOD.... and a sedentary lifestyle not often found as a wandering nomad or while engaged plowing the fields!

Thus it makes sense they would also be quite scarce in Middle-Earth too no?

;)

In summary, if you honestly think that the casting in these shows isn't being done with a keen eye to staying "politically correct" I'm not sure where you've been looking. (not implying this is all bad btw)

What the fuck is happening here? I thought I wandered into P&N. Identity politics and all that jazz can suck it.

The show is okay imo.

Everyone finding a way to get offended, angry, annoyed, etc. over what ethnicities, lifestyles, or whatev, modern programming uses, is very last year. In 2023 let's get back to our roots. I.E. roasting everything because we think everything sucks. :p Unless it truly sucks, then we go full contrarian and embrace it. Gotta keep them normies off balance.

A good example is the amount of fapping this forum did over Momento back in the day. It isn't a bad flick, but this place went full hipster over it. Anything popular? I could tell you without opening the forums, that is was getting charred black in here.

I have to admit, I found the show a bit slow for my liking at times. I am getting worse with the ADHD as my brain deteriorates. That's on me most likely, not the show.
