Amazon Prime price increase

I just got renewed for $79 so I have a full year before the price increase. Now that they are charging sales tax in my state I'm not so sure Prime is worth it, when I could get it same day (by driving) for similar pricing (BB price matches AMZN for electronics, etc) and save $100/yr.

We hardly use the streaming features at all and don't have a kindle so those aren't value added for me...

So how much gas will you use driving to pick up items over the course of a year? :whiste:

Unless you use the streaming often, getting people to pay for prime is also a good way to get people to buy more stuff from them. They ship slowly without prime for a reason. I can deal with waiting though.

I'm still in. I ordered heavily from amazon last year for both my personal use and business. Everything was prime 2-day or 1-day. If I had paid for that shipping we might be talking $600-$800 in shipping costs alone, so I'm pretty happy that the option to pay $100 for it exists. I really don't care much about the streaming and lending library parts of it.

It is technically against the TOS but they don't seem to enforce it, so far.

$35+ is free shipping - I've not had to pay shipping for them ever and don't have Prime. If I don't have enough, I leave it on my wishlist until I do. People just can't wait to get their stuff. Amazon did well for themselves with this business model.

I'm just wondering how the heck I missed 9 years of this. I thought it was only like 2 or 3 years old.

It's well worth it. I bought a sheet rock lifter a while back. Had to weigh 200 lbs. Only cost like $250 and was built like a tank, got free prime shipping. No idea how that's even possible but it probably paid for itself right there alone. Nevermind the tons of other things I buy and movies I watch. Free 2 day shipping is the best. Sometimes it comes in 1 day even.

I started buying food from them even. Shoot when I was snowed in UPS STILL comes. So right there it's worth it alone

And BB is notorious for getting different model number so they don't have to price match it. Same exact thing but has a slight difference in model number, usually a letter at the end, so they don't have to price match.

It's true. I'd definitely rather pay extra and get stuff faster than wait for it. There is a cost/benefit analysis going on here too though. Even though I pretty much always want stuff faster, for most things the standard 2 or 1 day shipping cost is too much to justify. If you can lower the price of expedited shipping by a certain amount, such as prime does when spread across a year's worth of orders, then there comes a point where the benefits outweigh the costs for me.

The volume of orders that I make means that I'm likely only paying marginally more than you per order for shipping anyway. If I were to tell you that you could get your stuff a week earlier for an additional $0.50 per order, wouldn't that mean something to you? It certainly does for me.

Yes, but I am also less likely to buy stuff I don't really need just because I have this perk I had to pay for.

I suppose. Looking at my order history, the majority of it was tax deductible business supplies though. I've never been one to buy things I don't need in any case.

Economically, it still saves me money. Their streaming service is fairly useless, but I love the shipping discounts. Just wish Prime applied to more stuff!

Don't they have free shipping over $25 anyway? Not sure it's worth it now.

I do this. Things come more slowly and mostly via USPS, which has been much more reliable than UPS or FedEx for me.

I've had recent issues with my Prime shipments not arriving within the 2 day window. I complained to Amazon and they refunded me my Prime subscription fee for the year and let me keep the subscription. I'll likely keep it at $99/year, but if it goes higher, they're going to need to make it worth my while to stay. I can just go back to planning my orders carefully to ensure I get free shipping from them and I'll wait a couple days longer.

Amazingly enough, I did get a Sunday shipment from them this past Sunday and there was no upcharge for the delivery. When my order status said it was going to be delivered on a Sunday, I was skeptical but it really did arrive.

For me, If you divide the price increase by the number of times Amazon delivers to my house, it's probably an additional 20 cents/delivery.

really? There is (or was) an option to add "authorized users" or something to that effect to allow other people in your household to use your Prime membership.
