This has been around for a while, I've used it several time and greatly prefer it to Paypal.

Yeah I was wondering why this was considered new. I have been buying Humble Bundles this way for quite a while.

There is nothing that I must have bad enough to use paypal. I do not, and will not use them for anything, the play fast and loose with your financial information, and want access to your checking accounts.

I just bought a power supply for my laptop on Amazon and paid with my bank account. I have a credit card and my bank account registered there, so I have no use for Paypal there.

Paypal has NEVER had access to your checking account. While Paypal wants you to link it, they cannot simply access your checking account for any reason. Experience with this, personally. (Got scammed via a CC chargeback on an ebay sale I made. Left my Paypal acct. with over $200 negative balance. I fought it, Paypal froze the acct. but NEVER accessed my checking acct. to recoup the money.)

I don't understand, what's new about this? A lot of websites I use let me pay through Amazon already using the "Checkout with Amazon" button:

I like it better than Paypal because I've had issues with Paypal, but I'm stuck with them since they're the standard for eBay and a lot of other sites, unfortunately.

While I am sure I will not use the Amazon offering, I know I will never do business again with PreyPal. They are as evil as the company that bought them (ePrey). If a merchant only takes PreyPal then it is one I do not do business with.

Saw this exchange on SlickDeals regardingGalaxy Note 3 orders from NegriElectronics:

Maybe my order is not showing up because I paid via Amazon Payments?
I also paid through Amazon and my order isn't showing up on Amazon nor Negri. Only proof I have of the sale is my bank statement and the confirmation email. I don't think I can wait much longer =[
I contacted them, there was a problem with not being logged when ordering when checking out and registering at the same time, but my order is good to go. :)

Hopefully they receive their shipments this week.

Amazon has a reputation to uphold. If they get a reputation of screwing people over, their entire existence will end.

PayPal's the only game in town, knows it and acts like it.

MotionMan

exactly.

I just ordered a bunch of stuff on amazon. the order was messed up. i called up and they refunded me the money and giving me $15 to overnight the stuff i needed (for a trip we are taking this weekend).

with paypal its a fight and not one you always win even though YOU are right. i went for useing ebay a lot to rarely now because of paypal.

so you're trying in one 900 pound gorilla for the other? not sure why this is advantageous.

with paypal at least I get 6 months to pay with 0 interest.

Most people have had good CS experience with Amazon. When asked the same thing about paypal, most people laugh or groan.

Amazon seems to be re-rolling out a service they offered back in ~1998-2000. We used it to sell stuff off our website. We switched to Paypal for lower fees. I'll have to take another look and see if Amazon's fees are competitive now.

How does this effect PayPal? Until Amazon lets me purchase things from regular people WITH SOME CONSUMER PROTECTION! they are still garbage. Guess what? Use the FS/FT forum here and pay with Amazon payments and the seller doesn't send you the item; Amazon doesn't care.

PayPal's bread and butter is eBay and the ability for everyone to buy and sell with protection.

Yes, the fees on eBay are incredibly high and stupid, but if someone doesn't pay or sends you a bad item, you're covered.

you mean BUY with protection

sellers get dicked by scamming douchebags all the time

What makes Paypal special is the ability for /me/ to take "credit card" payments. There needs to be a service that competes with that, and without the hassle of dealing with Paypal. Bitcoin could be a good competitor, but it's not for the average user.

Amazon Payments?
Google Checkout?
Serve?

I've had those options for the last several years.

For the exact reason SELLERS prefer Amazon Payments over Paypal. They're sick of getting dicked over by douchebag buyers who abuse the lopsided anti-seller policies that Paypal have. Paypal and eBay offer the seller nearly zero protections against unscrupulous buyers. Amazon Payments provides buyers with exactly the amount of protection they should need: Their credit card.

Do any of those work for person to person payments? If so, I'll look into them more. The only thing left then is a service to make anonymous payments. I want to be able to send money that's untraceable. IOW, digital cash.

Right? I pay all the time using Amazon or Google. I prefer Google since its easier to find my transactions but Amazon works fine.

I just ordered from Monoprice last week and used Google Checkout. I don't see what's new here.

Google does

Log into Gmail, open an email and add the person you want to send it to. Click on the $ sign at the bottom to attach money.

It works really well as long as the person isn't outside the US.

Google Wallet does that.

Use cash to buy a Visa giftcard at your local supermarket. And make sure you're wearing either a hoodie, hat, or burka when making the gift card purchase.

Interesting. I'll do some more reading on it later. I'm not seeing the anonymous part though. It looks like the money gets tracked from Google account to Google account. Another downside is USA only. That's where most of my purchases come from, but a non-trivial amount is outside the USA.

To all of you "Fuck PayPal" people, answer me this:

How will Amazon payments be any different than PayPal for non-eBay payments?

unfortunately, this is true. it's ebay where the problems really happen, and ebay won't accept amazon payments. though amazon will probably come in cheaper
