I don't order from Amazon a whole lot, but I have been doing it more and more recently. I purchased some audio CDs, but was disappointed with the packaging. It was, more or less, a piece of cardboard that was folded to give some rigidity to the structure and had a single 'air bag' inside. The box was not 100% sealed as there was ample space to peek inside.

Upon opening the package, one of the CD cases was cracked several times due to the poor packing. It wouldn't be such a big deal, but it was a 'deluxe' disc set so it has those folding arms with the additional disc inside making it a bit more difficult than average to replace.

I'm not totally pissed or anything - all of the actual discs are just fine without any scuffs, but I'm wondering if this is how Amazon ships all CD orders or just the ones with their free shipping service.

It depends on what kind of music you ordered so we know if we should ridicule you or stand up for you. 😉

Having used amazon free and amazon prime I don't know of a difference between how they ship.

The only difference I can think of is you is how long UPS beats the shit outa your package for since the less time they have it the less time they have to beat it up.

If you really are irked, file a complaint through amazon. Mention poor shipping left your CD Cases cracked but the disks themselves usable. They might offer replacement or a partial refund or just thank you for your time and next time it'll be fine.

Otherwise grab some jewel cases and replace the damaged ones and just call it a day?

Amazon sent me some mixing bowls in a "ready to ship box", which consisted of some thin cardboard around some ceramic. Suffice to say, all the bowls came shattered and I got my money back.

Amazon packaging isn't always that good, regardless of the shipping method. But I've had CD cases arrive cracked no matter how well they were packed -- the cases use brittle plastic that cracks easily.

I don't care as long as the CD isn't scratched, since I move most CDs to double jewel cases to save shelf space.

I have shopped at Amazon for about 9 years and I haven't had a single incident in regards to poor packaging. I guess I have been very fortunate, but if you are not satisfied, let them know. Their customer service is pretty solid.

Amazon will replace the broken case or probably just send you a whole new CD. Their customer service is unbeatable.

Thanks for the input - I enjoy my music and just wanted to see if their packaging differs based on the type of shipping chosen. I'll give them a jingle to let them know they need to work on that part, but I am not going to be upset and lose sleep over this matter. 🙂

I ordered a bunch of books and CDs from Amazon and had them shipped to me across the Pacific. They came in a gigantic sack. I'm not kidding, it was like a really big potato sack. Everything was packaged nicely in a box inside the sack, but it sure was strange to receive a big-ass Santa sack.

I don't think Amazon warehouses pack items differently for Prime members. I've gotten plenty of packages in the same packaging as OP's while having an active Prime account. In fact, Amazon packaging has gone down as of late from what I can tell. Books and DVDs that used to arrive in a box with airbags are now arriving in a crappy cardboard foldout.

I have never had anything arrive damaged from Amazon, and I order from them a lot and sometimes use the free shipping.

I've used Amazon's free shipping many times but only received damaged items once. I ordered 4 plant stands with a ceramic top, and two of the tops were broken. It was very simple to get Amazon to replace them, and they covered the return shipping on the broken ones.

I've spent many thousands at Amazon over the years and have never once had to send something back because it was damaged in shipping.

Same here pages and pages of things I have bought and no incidents on poor packaging causing damage.

I do read reviews and see people complain even when their items have arrived perfectly, I bought a 6 pack ink and it was just put in a box...totally adequate for shipping this item. Some had commented that it should have been bubble wrapped though.
