So these two girls sitting near me in the class room just wont shut their mouths during the lecture. I dont know them neither do they know me. I just want just tell them to be quiet but I didn't want to deal with the "awkwardness" afterwards that will last the whole semester whenever I see them in the class. What would u have done?

I'd be as polite as I could about it, but I think I'd definitely say something. These two airheads will probably be your best friends around finals time anyways if that's the kind of attention they pay in class.
 
Move to a different seat?

Find out where they live, and throw a brick through their window(s) with an attached note saying that a brick will continue to break their window(s) everyday unless they are quiet during that class?

I was in a similar situation not so long back, apart from it was a whole row of guys.

I turned round and said 'Are you going to shut up or what?" - They shut up.

yes i would have said "shhhhh" wtf it is class, what is more important your educaiton or 2 girls you dislike anyway for bothering you
 
Normally I'd move rather than confront them, but if the class has assigned seats then your only option is to tell them quietly and politely to shut up.
