So, is oriental an ok word to use again?

What's wrong with oriental? It means from the orient. Nothing derogatory about that. 😕

Oriental refers to objects, Asian refers to people. Or so I was told by an Asian friend.

Semantics...

Maybe, but it's good to know the polite way to say things so I can actively ignore them instead of just being a moron. 🙂

From wikipedia:
In the late 20th century America, the political correctness movement dubbed the terms "Orient" and "Oriental" as "archaic" or "politically incorrect". However, the overwhelming majority of English speakers worldwide believe there is nothing wrong with the term as a method of distinguishing East Asians (such as Chinese, Koreans and Japanese) from Middle Easterners, South Asians and Siberians, all of whom fall under the umbrella of "Asian."

Are you calling me a moron?

Not at all, at least, that wasn't the intent. 🙂

I can't say i've ever had "real" chinese food, but "americanized" stuff is just getting sweeter and sweeter I've noticed. But PF changs is alright... but I don't get the big fuss over it though. One of my friends had made a big deal about how it was such a great place... didn't seem any different than any other place.

except it had a bar, and the waiter offered to roll my mushu pork for me... which caught me completely off gaurd as I had him repeat it to me because I couldn't believe what I had just heard.

You know, it had never occurred to me that it refered to objects, until a white friend of mine asks me if I was offended by that. This was my senior year in high school, and I just looked at her w/ the most confused look.. ha.

Sucks for them if they don't like PF Changs. It's not supposed to be authentic asian cuisine, it's an american restaurant with an asian menu. It'd be like someone from American going to Japan and hating a burger joint for the sole purpose of it not being in America.

I am a white guy and I kind of like PF Chang's. I wouldn't say it is great food, but it is good. My woman, though, is Chinese and she doesn't care for it too much. She doesn't say it is bad food, but just not good food either. However she does like how they offer brown rice instead of only white rice.

She was a wee bit miffed when we went to one in Pheonix (well Scotsdale. . . live in DFW though) and they had this giant canopy/tent type thing inside. One of those interior design motiffs to make it appear you are eating oustide in some garden instead of insome some building. Anyhow so they had all of these cables bolted in various places to support this canopy. It just so happens that one of these guidewires were anchored right into the side of a Quan Yin statue.
She thought it was so wild that some place that tried to pass itself off as a Chinese food establishment would do something so crass like put a bolt into the side of Quan Yin.
For those not familar with Quan Yin, it would be akin going to some restaurant and finding something bolted into the side of a statue of the Virgin Mary. It is just not something that you should do.

So she was so surprised that there was so little respect in that particular part of Chinese culture when dining at a place that passed itself off as a Chinese restaurant

I dunno, I remember hearing it for 5 minutes from my friend who was a teacher for saying Asian. He said we were supposed to say oriental, which to me sounds more derogatory. It's funny, because I don't ever hear anyone say, "Say African-American, not black," but that's also derogatory IMO because black sounds worse than AA.

Edit: Mixed up my story. And I've never had PF Changs so I wouldn't know.

I've heard people say African-American, not black before

I don't mind Americanized Chinese food at all... it's just a different taste... I don't care what they call it. Tastes good, if not better... but I need to lay off the MSG...
