Am I the only one that thinks that above ground pools are a little bit white trash? This guy in my office goes on and on about how great his above ground pool is and he drives me crazy in general and this is just another thing. Seriously, they are just an overgrown baby pool.

I've never liked how they look myself, but I'd imagine it would be pretty awesome to have a large pool of any style (above or below ground).

In the US, there's definitely a WT stereotype for some reason. I'm sure it's better than no pool at all for a lot of people though.

In ground pools are where its at.

If I ever decide I absolutley HAVE to get a pool, I'll spend the extra $15000 on a real pool.

Depends how it's installed. The house my parents bought a couple of years ago came with an above ground pool, but it is completely surrounded by a huge deck. Since the house has a crawl space, the pool and deck are level with the back of the house.

They did have an in-ground pool that they had installed at their old house. I think it was like $20,000 to $25,000.

They *can* be trashy if not taken care of and done half-assed... other times, they can be very nice and a much less expensive option than an in ground pool.

They look really nice, but you basically lose a lot of space surrounding the pool. The pool area won't flow into the rest of the yard unless you've built ramps off in every direction.

The bonus of an above ground pool with a large deck is that the deck usually doubles as a privacy barrier of sorts so your pool area is now somewhat enclosed.

Approximate costs for a 16x32 pool:
inground:
Steel wall+vinyl side: $17,000
Gunite: $37,000

Above ground:
metal wall oval: $2000
soft side rectangular: $4000

...and that is for a large pool, round ones are much cheaper.

Edit:
my point: inground pools are nice and all, but you're comparing a Scion TC to an Aston Martin Vantage price wise.

Above the ground pools are much easier to set on the curb when you realize that all you do is clean the thing and no one ever swims in it.

my neighbour has an above-ground with a nice deck off the back of his raised ranch. it's a salt-water system too... very low-maintenance. i would consider buying one, if only to get rid of some of the grass i have to cut :p

my neighbs aren't white trash, FWIW.

As long as you have two sets of stairs to the deck I don't think you lose much yard space a t all.

$15000? are you kidding me. Double that for anything decent.

LOL. that sounds really dumb.

you build a deck on one side of it... you don't need ramps around the whole pool. lol n00b

Probably - but I loved the things as a kid and was oblivious to what "white trash" was so I have no problem with them.

I dislike when they are poorly maintained, but that goes for basically anything - be it a home, car, lawn, garden, etc.

16' x 32' inground pools run around $12-18K depending on shape and depth. you can get an inground "sport pool" for less. by "decent" i'm assuming you mean "huge"? :p

A pool can also hurt you when it comes time to sell your house. As you said with the above ground you can throw it on the curb, throw some grass seed down, and be done with it.

With Kids is a fairly cheap thing to buy. If you have no kids... well you then have enough money to hang out at the country club and let some other person clean the pool.
