Am I the only one who doesn't like turkey?

I prefer sugar-cured (city) ham. Country ham is way too salty.

God, no. Every piece of prosciutto I've tried tasted like it came off of a boar (as in not castrated) hog, and boar meat tastes like what the hog's been wading through his whole life. D:
 
Parma ham is nice especially when it is served with water melon as an appetiser. We will probably be having this on Christmas day before the roast Turkey.
 
Why can't anyone be creative for this meal? Last year, I tried to get everyone together to minimize the number of parties. I did a regular turkey for everyone else but made a couple of fried turkey legs for myself(one with rosemary and one with garlic and spices). What was the conclusion? They weren't happy that I messed with turkey and shouldn't cook this year. 🙁

Like 20 years ago I was invited to Thanksgiving at a black friends family gathering. They had beef brisket, BBQ ribs, mac & cheese, collared greens, cornbread, twice baked potatoes with bacon. They had Turkey and stuffing too, but they had so many other things. Every other Thanksgiving for me had been the same boring Turkey, same mashed potatoes with boring gravy. I learned that not just my family, but Caucasian people in general tended to celebrate it very traditionally. I know my family gets up in arms when I suggest Mac & Cheese lol. And they get upset if I even suggest tweaking the gravy. I understand keeping it true to the roots of the holiday, but damn. Asking around to my other black friends, a lot went all out and didn't stick to tradition at all, they just made a grip of delicious food.

I know Brisket has zero tie in with Thanksgiving, but since I hate Turkey with a passion, that year I became a huge fan of the way black people celebrate it. And they still had plain ass Turkey and boring potatoes and gravy for all the purists. Seems like a win/win to me, but my family disagrees and considers anything outside of the box to be blasphemous.

In '78 I was invited to Thanksgiving with a Chinese family. We spent over six hours eating and drinking tea. The cook of the family made at least a dozen different dishes with turkey. We had turkey-rice soup, turkey-skin salad, turkey egg rolls, turkey chow mein, turkey fried rice - a non-stop array of dishes. There were six adults plus a few small children. Between us, we went through a one-pound tin of Chinese tea during and after the meal. My friend and I stumbled home in the snow, yelling "R-O-L-A-I-D-S" just to be silly. The food was absolutely exquisite.

That sounds like a ridiculously good meal. I'd love that on Thanksgiving, but I'm not exactly tied to tradition.

My family is all from Italy. I joke about whether they actually understand what the holiday itself means in the US, as I don't need to tell anyone that Italians will take any old excuse to all get together and overeat. Over the years, they worked in a Capon instead of a turkey. But there are also other "traditional" Thanksgiving foods, like pasta (usually a lasagna), goat or lamb (not just for Easter!), all sorts of greens, vegetables, etc. The one thing we do that's normal is the sausage stuffing, which I love.
 
I just saw this thread now, and haven't read any responses, but let me guess...they all say "You just haven't tasted turkey cooked correctly."

Am I right?
 
Yeah, not a big fan but it's ok. I also prefer ham.

Chicken (if cooked well so it is moist)
Lamb
Beef
Ham
Pork
Turkey
Duck (don't like)
Fish (yuck, will avoid)
 
Never liked turkey. I have it every Thanksgiving at my sister's place, but I usually ended up eating a lot more of other stuff and very little turkey. Now, turducken is something that I'd like to try at least once
 
Really not a fan myself. Had fried turkey for the first time last year and found it to be good. Going to try smoking a turkey this year to see what happens.

I smoke one every year. I like to cut it into quarters, otherwise the cavity gets a buildup of soot/junk in it and makes the smoke taste overpowering. The legs and wings work best- if you want just buy them instead of a whole one.
