Am I the only one thinking Quake1 is the best FPS out there?

I played Quake1 for the first time in quite a while today.

Damn I sucked, I used to be really good at it, but all these new slow-ass games like Quake3, CS, etc really poisons your skill.

Doesn't anyone else love this game anymore?
Fast, good weapons, good gameplay, the best man wins, plain and simple.
 
Quake 2 CTF and deathmatch were more fun for me than Q3, never tried Q1 online. The good old days of "rails only", low-gravity space station slo-mo, etc. etc.

The rail is one of the things I hate most about Quake2/3.

Insta-hit weapons suck for games like these IMO, especially in a game as slow as Quake2.

Playing rail-only CTF was a lot of fun, especially with armor and powerups turned off -- one shot kills, but the recharge time meant you'd better aim instead of just spraying rockets around.
 
I agree that Quake 1 may still be the best.......CTF on Quake 2 was great as well, Quake3 is good too, but the cheating has really gotten me down on it....almost need to take the railgun out of the quake games to avoid those cheats.....



Painkeep is actually my favorite! Great Quake 1 and 3 mod...
 
The original Quake is still my favorite, too, and I don't play MP !!!!! Part of it may be that it's the first "real 3d" game I played ( after spending $200 for a VooDoo 1 card😉) Lots of conversions, mods and maps available. The new games are prettier, but there was nothing like hearing the ogre dragging his bag of grenades, then turning a corner and running into him. How many hours DID I spend playing and re-playing it ?
 
Quake1 is still a good game but it's nowhere near the best FPS out there. Also Quake3 is at least as fast as Quake1, if not faster. UT is a bit slow though so that's why I play it on hardcore mode which speeds up the game by 25%.

You still need a high degree of skill not to get mowed down by opponents using machine gun style or blast style weapons.

AMEN !!

Its a damn shame it wasn't cleaned up a bit and given a browser interface for multiplayer, similar to UT. I remember having tiny scraps of paper all over my desk with server IP's written down, hoping that there was just ONE available slot left for me to join in. I played at least one level every night for 9 months straight at one point. I also played exclusively at one server in the later stages, and we were as close as family, covering for each other in those adrenaline-pumping CTF games. That game is a seminal moment in many peoples PC gaming history, as many here can attest to. Q2 was just too sloooow and Q3 was a railfest. I gave up on both of them within 6 months of release :frown:

P.S. Anyone wanna launch a Q1 server this weekend so we can run around at 200fps and frag away ??

Yup, but I still liked DN3D better than the Dooms or the Quakes. I'd maybe still play it if I could get sound to work in XP, I made sooo many levels for that game.
 
Nothing brings back the memories like Q1 DM level 2 🙂 I used to play a friend from school almost everyday on our lowly 33.6k modems! We even played it at school with about 8 of us and with a Brother (the holy kind). I went to a catholic private school and the bro's were totally cool with Quake 🙂, they even joined in on some of the games 🙂

No way, Q1 is faster than Q3 in just about every aspect.
Running is faster, rockets are faster, gameplay as a whole is faster.

Q2 is the slouch of the family though.
 
Nothing can bring back the excitement of the first time I Played DOOM, being a CW fan for life.
That game was awesome on my 486. FAST and fun.

As far as the quakes go, I'm bound to Q1. never got into the others.

I disagree because Quake1 had a lot of extremely underpowered and weak weapons. Pretty much all of Quake3's weapons are powerful and balanced plus the game allows you jump higher and further.

There are no weak and underpowered weapons, only weak and underpowered players 😛
