They took a while to go down. IIRC, a history channel show said that the plane probably spiraled downwards for another ~10-15mins after the voice recorder died.

I've never been afraid to fly and I'm still not. It's a thrill and it's very efficient. I fly every couple of months for business, but my wife doesn't enjoy it, so we drive for vacation travel.

That said, I dread it. I mean, I really fscking hate to fly. Why? Hours of being couped up in a tiny seat with my knees in my chin listening to some fscking kids scream and cry and having some lonely idiot with bad breath always sit next to me and attempt to talk to me the entire flight. It is NEVER the hot chick that sits next to me. Nope. Always the fat, lonely talkitive idiot with BO and bad breath.

That pretty much sums it up. I hate flying, but I'm not scared of it.

Personally, I don't have a problem with flying at all. But to all the people who are using the argument of, "it's safer than driving" ... I think this kind of misses the point. Yes, flying is safer than driving, but when plane crashes do happen, I would imagine them to be a hell of a lot scarier than the average car wreck.

Most of the time, car accidents are over before you even realize they are happening, whereas when a plane starts going down, there is a healthy window of time where you realize you are just completely fvcked. If I was forced to choose between dying instantly in a car wreck or going down in a plane, it wouldn't be a difficult decision to make.
