Am I paranoid? Opinions welcomed!

This is going to sound bizarre! And before you go on I would like to say I am not tooting my own horn or anything.

I went to a job interview at a bus company yesterday, I applied for a position in their office. To get to the office you have to walk through their breakroom, when i got there all of the drivers were on break (about 20 of them). I walked in and it got dead silent, and everyone just sat there looking at me. I felt like I was in one of those old westerns when the bad guy walks into the bar!

During my interviewthe owner was telling me that there are only 2 woman that work there,(both are in their 40's and are dressed in old jeans and sweatshirts) everyone else is male. He then starts telling me that no matter how hard I try avoiding the bus drivers it would be impossible.

By the end of the interview I got two really strong vibes from this man

1. I'm too attractive to work there
2. If i did work there I most likely would be sexually harrassed

He never came right out and said either of these things but I know that's what he meant.

Anyone else ever had anything like this happen to them?

I spent a large portion of my adult life working in secure lock down units, some forsenic for adult male psych patients, many times I'd be the only woman working a unit or facility. Most of the guys I worked with over the years were great and many I count among my close friends. However,I've done agency shifts in places where the male staff was so weird and so creepy that I wouldn't take another shift at that facility. At one place a few months later ,a female staff person was brutally beaten and raped while enroute to the hospital's kitchen to fetch the food trays for the night staff...they never caught who did it but it was widely rumored that it was indeed male professional staff !
Go with your instincts,if you got creept vibes just going to interview, look elsewhere !

I woudn't recommend working there unless you keep the possibility (even likelihood) in mind of fighting a sexual harassment lawsuit against them in the future. If you do decide to work there, document everything you come across.

When I first started going out with my g/f, she was involved in such a lawsuit, and the company involved ended up settling for about $65K (big money when you're 19..) On the other hand, she was an emotional wreck about it. Good luck to you, however you decide.

Gut instinct and intuition are usually correct. Do you really want to look at that bunch every day??

No not really, but my hubby is out of work and we need the money. Guess i will just keep looking
😉

After looking at "The Face of a Killer" I'd recommend you find somewhere else to work, like maybe in my office! 😉 How do you feel about living in Georgia?

😀

By having a look-see at "The Face of a Killer", I would say you are exceptionally cute, and can now empathize with the bus drivers.

😱:Q

I think you have good reason for your concerns, however, things may not be as bad as they seem. Why not talk to the other two women that work there and ask them about the work environment? It also depends on your level of tolerance in terms of "sexual harassment". If the bus drivers just stared at you whenever you entered the room, would that be too uncomfortable of a work environment? Of course, it's one thing to stare at a good looking woman, and another thing to start dropping rude comments, etc. One thing could lead to another, it's impossible to really gauge the work environment from one interview.

If you need the job that badly I'd take it, after talking to the other two women there. If you find the place too uncomfortable to work in, just quit?

Men really don't bother me, I have a very good understanding of how the male mind works, maybe because almost all of my friends are male.

He also told me that he gives a 30 grace period to his employees, if you fnd the job is not for you, or you are uncomfortable with the working conditions you can leave and there will not be any hard feelings.

with that 30 day grace period I'd say give it a shot. Maybe the guys were just surprised. If they still give you the creepy feeling at the end of the grace period drop the job like a bad habit

yes ofcorse, we must see what the issue is about 🙂

seems to me that if you are looking for money then you could always just start working there and if something happens you can sue them for sexual harrasment.

I'm really not the type to sue people over sexual harrasment, I'm more the type to kick him in the balls :Q

Don't do it unless you're the type of girl that has a thick skin. On the other hand, if you love and crave attention, this may be the job for you. You could probably do what ever you want and get away with it. 😀

Of course you're paranoid.

Everyone knows that most males are perfectly capable of controlling their desires.

Okay, perhaps you're not so paranoid after all 😛

well perfect, if you enjoy that then this job is perfect for you 🙂

He was just trying to warn you. And probably for good reason. You're pretty, they're horny. Period, the end, goodbye. 😉

But if you want the job badly enough, go for it! Hopefully they won't harrass you, but they may stare an awful lot. 😉

When I need to control my desires, I just remind myself that breasts are nothing but external glands. 🙂 😉

You're not yet getting the picture, but at least you're making some progress.

well shanni, i think its up to you.

from what ive seen you are pretty much a strong independent woman and if you think you could handle situations like that then go for it and when it happens set them in their place. its better to be the office bitch than the office stepping stone.

but if you want to avoid that kinda situation id move on unless the pay is really really good and your family needs the money.

*kat. <-- wants to make a comment like "what? isnt being a ho paying well anymore?" but wont. 😛

Am I paranoid? Opinions welcomed!

What you described does not meet the clinical requirements for a prognosis and classification of your state as paranoid. Moreover, the fact that you perceive that situation as (realistically so, I may add) hazardous and consider the state of your family and resulting consequences of your actions lead me to make a preliminary guesstimate that you are roughly 1 positive SD from the average in your mental health and coping capabilities.

Realistically, don't take the job unless you are so desperate for money that you can't survive. It's not worth it to be in a place like that, bad mojo.

Cheers ! 🙂
