Am I delusional, or is Far Cry 2 an absolutely horrible game?!

OK, so I bought this thing recently for PC because it was fairly cheap, got fairly good reviews, and I wanted to test out my newly upgraded rig. Upon playing it for a few hours and realizing what the game had me doing, I gotta say it is the most horrendous piece of crap game to come out in recent time. Wait maybe that's to strong... no, no it really isn't.

The graphics are fine, you can't say they're great anymore after seeing Crysis, so they're fine. But the game itself is just so goddamn boring! I think this blog is very in line with my opinion:

I can't even believe this game has been hailed as a "GTA in the desert." Yeah, total immersion when the game world is practically empty, and when there is someone, it's some random white dude in the middle of Africa roaming the night in a Pinto intent on killing the PC and only the PC. Seriously, when you set a game in Africa, maybe, you know, actually have some native people? Instead of having 75% of the NPCs in the game be Hispanic mercenaries?

At one point the Indian "buddy" in the game told me "you just keeping seeing the same people over and over again" or something along those lines. Yeah, that definitely summarizes this entire game for me.

This is coming from a guy who thoroughly enjoys mainstream, hyped up, mindless shooters. I thoroughly enjoyed all the Halos, both Gears, and Fallout 3 was a great game. Sorry for the rant, but I just can't believe people actually can enjoy this game. How many people did Ubisoft have to bribe? C'mon, PC Gamer 94%? Are you kidding me?

I absolutely loved the game.

The weapons were cool, fire propagation was awesome, and the graphics were beautiful. Also the vehicles were fun (especially swamp boats), as was exploration like hunting diamonds.

The respawning was a bit on the heavy side but even so, it was a fantastic game.

Plus the random idle chatter was hilarious, especially with South African accents.

Haha, to each their own I guess.

I don't know, if the game had included a SoF-style gore engine maybe I'd like it a bit more, because that would make blowing away those stupid mercs that respawn every 2 minutes and crash into you in the middle of the road with their goddamn Pintos, far more enjoyable.

P.S.: Actually reading the comments on the blog post I linked above is pretty hilarious.

I can't really get into it.. the graphics are awesome.. but it really doesn't seem like Farcry at all to me.. and Farcry is one of my favorite games.

Far Cry 2 is hard for me to take seriously.. Finding a diamond is too annoying.. so I just shoot everyone I see on 'hard' mode. Seems fun enough for short periods..

I tried it for a bit but gave up because I found it dire as well.
Crysis was much more enjoyable and much more like Farcry.

I hate how everyone in the game would shoot you without being provoked, and how you could burn a bunch of stuff then come back 5 minutes later and it would be grown back 🙁

I'm glad you remind me how horrible this game was.
Now I can dig it up from somewhere in the closet and put it up for sale.

I played it for PS3 and its a bad game. Bad guys respawn to fast, you have to clear guys out of the same area over and over again. It also seems like guys take way to many shots to die, im a big RB6 fan and love realistic shooters and if i have to put 7-12 rounds from a (insert high powered weapon of choice here) into a guy to kill him it kinda ruins it for me especially with the respawn rate. I give it a 3/10

I really can't get into it either, for pretty much the same reasons. I've had the game since last December, I think, and I've tried to get into it about three times. Just mindlessly boring driving from point A to point B, plus a brief firefight.

By comparison, I blew through both GRAW and GRAW2 in the space of slightly less than a week because the games were just more engrossing. I loved SOF2, mainly because it's a run and gun game, without all the monotonous driving.

Also, I've had friends back in college who were from Africa, which makes it all the more obvious how bad the voice acting is, as far as the VAs trying to imitate African accents.

everyone thinks the same about far cry 2... but what really makes me upset about it... is the fact that the physics are somewhat weak... not much stuff flying around like Crysis...

I'm on the fence about this one. I liked the ability to be a pyromaniac, the fires could be really cool during firefights. I also liked the long range sniping that you could do. Taking out a whole outpost with one well placed shot into a propane tank was fun to watch. I thought the graphics and physics were pretty good.

On the flip side getting from one point to another was tedious and boring due to the incessant respawning of enemies and their shoot you on sight animosity. Clearing out the same outpost over and over really sucked.

It was fun but got way too repetitive. The thing I hated the most was when you would clear out an outpost and you came back to that same outpost later, there would still be enemies there.

You're not delusional. The game is awful.

Monotonous to the infinite. Aren't these the same guys who did Assassin's Creed? Because it sure feels the same. Boring, flat, repetitive.

Plus to add insult to injury, it's got nothing, NOTHING to do with Far Cry!! Where's the over the top voice acting, the cartoonish feel? It's just a crappy FPS abusing the legacy of a damn good game.

It's just too damn much trouble to slog through it. The game started glitching where my guy was passing out every few seconds at the beginning of the second large area. I was going to have to reload a really old save to get out of it and I decided it wasn't worth it and quit. I still haven't finished it.

I can't stand how you have to run all over the map just to get a new "quest". This alone becomes too monotonous. I think this may be the first PC game I never finish.

loved it and hated it at the same time. if only there was life in africe, and if the missions werent so repetitive and somewhat useless....

waste of a perfectly good engine if you ask me
