So someone locally has a 1975 I6 Jeep DJ5 postal jeep for sale. Looks like he's done a good amount of work on it.

I have a motorcycle I ride to work as much as possible and a bycicle if I have the time. I also have an old VW that was my daily driver, that I have partly retired because I'd like to send it out for bodywork and a paintjob but that costs too much.

So I got a beater tercel, and the mpg isn't working out on it, but it seems it might be better now that the weather is warming up. I started to sell it to pick up an old pickup, but decided that I'd be better to try to get the tercels mpg back up.

So, is it just the beer talking, or would it be totally sweet to drive a nice looking mail truck(no usps decals/paint) on rainy and cold days?

Can't seem to find stats on the mpg of a dj5 though. :(

The good news is, you can probably keep it running forever. Not sure about the top, but you can buy pretty much every piece of a regular CJ brand new. A DJ is slightly different, but there were so many that parts are still readily available.

Don't get your hopes up about getting stellar gas mileage, though.

Yeah, a friend of mine had a '75 CJ5 back when gas was cheap ($0.75/gal), and he used to bitch about the mileage. You'll probably see 12 city/15 hwy max. Also, it was a freaking nightmare on the highway. We drove it from Tallahassee to Ft. Lauderdale once, which is certainly a long trip, but I felt like I had fought two heavyweight boxing matches when we were done.

That engine is really a dog, it's well suited to low speed delivery applications.

And don't expect much more than 15 mpg.

Being 2wd only will help out a tad with the mileage but I still wouldn't expect much. What else can you get for $800 that is that cool though?

If you want good fuel mileage, you should probably try to find a small, light, smalle engined older car.

A first gen MR2 will get very, very good gas mileage as well as be mid engine so it'll be sort of "cool". I think it got 27/32EPA on the old rating since it has only a 116hp 1.6L motor.

what's more surprising is the average user mpg of 33.7mpg

I expect you to send in a video to MTV's Pimp My Ride if you buy that.

I've seen an ice cream truck on there, there's no doubt that they'd do a mail truck :p.
