I thought Americans are allowed to go to any country and live there? North Korea, of course, being the exception.

You can't go anywhere unless you get permission from the government. Your very existence is used to back up the debt your country has accumulated.

It's true! I saw some scary video about it on youtube.

If you have family in Cuba then you can go for a limited time. I long for the day that we can freely travel to Cuba. I love Cuban food.

Having been, it's pretty much like any other Latin American country. Except everybody's equally poor. People are very nice though. You don't get the crime there either like you do in Mexico. Probably safer than a lot of big US cities.

I think once Castro dies, you'll see the country open up in the same way China did after Mao kicked the bucket. There's already some foreign investment taking place by Canadian, European, and Chinese firms. Lot's of interest in mining and off shore oil. Tourism is also pretty big from the same countries. Due to the political turmoil in Venezuela, they don't really have any regional economic allies anymore.

Just one thing to note, American made Cuban food is probably better than the authentic stuff, due to higher quality ingredients being available. Meat especially.

There are specific laws for travel to Cuba for things like tourism and commerce. Unless you're a Cuban-American citizen, I don't think it would be a good idea. Plus, travel back to the US isn't great. First class on a refrigerator box doesn't come with drink service.

Lots of people sail to cuba. There are stories out on sailing boards on how to do this without the gov't knowing. I don't condone it, but it is possible to visit there, although probably not work.

Couldn't you just fly out of the US and hitch a flight into Cuba? I know some guys told me they did this through Mexico.

I am not saying it isn't possible. Hell, you can buy a ticket in Mexico and they give you a Cuban travel visa thing to be stamped (so it isn't on your passport), but that doesn't make it legal.

I think the embargo is stupid, but every time congress tried to ease or remove restrictions, Bush threatened to veto it. I am not sure if anything other than some light relaxing of the restrictions has happened during Obama's reign though.

You can, but you have to be careful. If you get your passport stamped, you're pretty much screwed.

What's the punishment is your found to have travelled to Cuba?

Punishment can be fines or prison time. Haven't ever actually heard of anyone being caught though. I knew a girl who high school who went to Cuba every so often with her mother (the rest of her family was stuck there) and each time, they had to go to Mexico first and then to Cuba.

Why Cuba? Why not any one of the other Caribbean islands that don't have silly US restrictions? I mean, I know they have good cigars and all but that's about it.

You're allowed to go, you're just not allowed to come back afterwards. So go, be free.

Before relations were normalized with Vietnam, my parents would just fly to Taiwan or Malaysia and then take a connecting flight to Vietnam.
