I drive just like you: I'm rarely passed on the road, shifting lanes quite often. I've driven in NYC for 10 years and have commonly made Manhattan -> JFK in 20 minutes, 125th street to Houston St. on 2nd avenue without hitting a light etc. I keep track of every car anywhere remotely near me all the time. I say all this so you don't just dismiss my advice outright.

Despite all this I always signal, all the time, everywhere. Why wouldn't you do this? Do you know how long it takes to make up 100 yards at a speed difference of 20 MPH? 10 seconds. Are you really surveying the entirety of your car every 10 seconds when you think you're 100 yards away from the next car? Probably not.

Don't be stupid. It only takes one mistake.

Also if you're changing lanes every 5 seconds you are terrible at choosing the proper lane for driving. You should survey further down the road, and if you're really keeping track of all your surrounding drivers you should absolutely know who's driving in a manner conducive to your getting ahead of the pack. Is your goal to impulsively change lanes as many times as possible, or to get ahead of the current pack of cars?

On the highway I don't always use my blinkers. Often times there will be a car a few hundred yards back, and one a couple hundred feet ahead that I'm approaching fast (a lot of people in my area do 10 under on the interstate for some reason) but otherwise no cars in my immediate vicinity, so I'll just lumber over without bothering with my blinker. I'll pass, go a couple hundred feet past, then lumber over again with no blinker.

To clarify, I always check my mirrors, and I only do it when there is a considerable amount of distance to the nearest car, far enough that no other cars are really affected by the lane change. Is that really so bad? Lately my brother pointed it out to me "kill you to use a blinker eh?". If there is any need to, I do. But often, there isn't really any need so I don't bother (my blinker is really annoying).

I encounter dumbfucks who don't use their blinkers practically all the time. It is really frustrating trying to figure out what these idiots are planning on doing and then it's even more amusing when they get angry at you because you couldn't read their mind to know what they were planning on doing.

Use your blinker. It is common courtesy and it's the law.

At that point, I become a defensive driver and usually, THEY will too, and depending on the flow of traffic, one of us will then proceed to lead and one will follow. You see, we do not drive SHIT cars, and we do not tolerate SCRATCHES on our cars. You'll know when you see us.

Just a guess, you're an Asian guy, about 18-25, parents just bought you a brand new Acura TL or the like (for the gas mileage and the 5-star crash test rating! ) and you like showing off. You like that when you hit the gas you're instantly passing any car. Two things:

You are the definition of a stereotype.

Your death on a local highway (because that's where you'll make a mistake, not local roads or an interstate) should not be considered a tragedy by any standards. You will likely reap what you sow. I'm specifically talking about situations where you really oughtn't be worrying about what the hell I'm doing when there's that much distance between us. I'm not concerned that the guy 1/2 mile behind me can't figure out what I'm doing, it doesn't affect him at all

If I see someone drifting from one lane to the next without signaling and then back again a short while later I conclude that they are on something and that they are probably a hazard to me and everyone else on the road. If nothing else it alerts me to keep an eye on him because at the very least he's unpredictable and doesn't seem to be able to make up his mind.

It really isn't necessary to go jumping in and out of lanes or cutting people off. You don't get to your destination any sooner and you generally just piss everyone around you off. If anything, your lane hopping creates more congestion. Just this morning I was driving to work in stop and go traffic on the 5 freeway here in San Diego when I noticed this guy riding my ass in a white pickup truck. I was moving along in the far left lane in very slow moving traffic. All 4 lanes of the freeway were completely full and traffic was moving along at 15-20mph. I was leaving an appropriate gap to the vehicle in front of me but this asshat kept riding my bumper. He'd move into the next lane and zoom up next to me and then slow for the cars in front of him. Then he'd cut back in behind me when my lane moved faster. This went on for a good 5-6 miles before traffic started moving at speed again and that jerkoff was in the same spot as I was after all that lane jumping.
