Am I a jerk?

On the highway I don't always use my blinkers. Often times there will be a car a few hundred yards back, and one a couple hundred feet ahead that I'm approaching fast (a lot of people in my area do 10 under on the interstate for some reason) but otherwise no cars in my immediate vicinity, so I'll just lumber over without bothering with my blinker. I'll pass, go a couple hundred feet past, then lumber over again with no blinker.

To clarify, I always check my mirrors, and I only do it when there is a considerable amount of distance to the nearest car, far enough that no other cars are really affected by the lane change. Is that really so bad? Lately my brother pointed it out to me "kill you to use a blinker eh?". If there is any need to, I do. But often, there isn't really any need so I don't bother (my blinker is really annoying).

Am I an asshole?

no, i am. i cut people off all the time without blinkers.

Yes. You ALWAYS use your blinker. I don't care if it's 3am, and you're the only one on the road. You use the blinker. It needs to become routine, so you don't have to think about it, or ever forget. You change direction, you use your blinker EVERY TIME.

Use them. It's not for you, it's for the people you are passing, moving in front of. It's always better for people to know what you intend to do, rather than have them guess and get it wrong...

It's sort of a cut or dry issue. Is it OK to not use a blinker when there's no cars nearby or is it assholeish. I don't care the result, cause I'm still gonna do it, just wondering.

Well the point is that I only omit the blinker when they really don't NEED to know what I'm doing. If they don't see me change lanes to the left 300 ft behind them and then they do it, I'm still 300ft behind them and it doesn't matter. It's not like I'm changing lanes without and the guy way behind me is like "WHOA BUDDY ABOUT CUT ME OFF"

This, so you don't forget when it really is important.

auto manufacturers really should just stop including blinkers on their vehicles. it'll save on manufacturing costs that will result in lower car prices for all. 🙄

If there is any traffic, use them. It's not for you to decide what they need to see.

That said, if you're on the road at 3am and the only other thing on the road is emptyness and solitude, drive accross two lanes and give the black sky the finger as you move, blinkerless, from lane to lane for all I care.

I like the euro setup where you tap the stalk and it flashes three times. It makes signaling easy for even those who are lazy 🙂

There's no need to use blinkers if others don't need to know what you are doing.

The problem is... most people don't know when others need to know.

Until a drunk driver with their lights off runs into the back of you.

Its happened before to a relative I knew. The drunk driver died, my relative was fine (he was in a 18 wheeler).

You're a huge asshole and you are a terrible driver no doubt. I fuckin hate people like you, especially when I'm riding my motorcycle and 90 % of riding a motorcycle is being totally aware of your surroundings and predictions of what people in front of you are going to do.

Be proper fool.

100 yards from the nearest other car traveling in the same direction? Nah, I'm not going to risk spilling the drink that's in my left hand so that I can turn on the blinker.

Here's another question: When you're in the "left turn only lane. All traffic in this lane must turn left" - do you feel that your intention to turn left is signaled to other drivers?

It should be habit, you shouldn't even think about it. If you're consciously thinking about flicking on your blinker you're going to forget to use it sometime when you need it.

One thing I absolutely HATE is when people come on a highway come up to a point where their lane ends and merges over and they just shift over without a blinker or even looking.

that's exactly how i feel. i get super annoyed when i'm riding with someone else and they neglect using their blinker.

Changing lanes IS something you should be consciously thinking about when you're doing that in a car. I can't count how many times I've been on the highway & a blinker goes on followed by someone nearly running into me.
