i have the 865PE NEO2 FIS2R and love it for overclocking,, its a very user firendly bios and handles overclocking very well.
currently with my 3.0C ES i am running
13x multiplier = 2.6ghz
275mhz fsb = 1100mhz
vcore = stock voltage
OCZ EL Gold PC4000 Rev 2 @ DDR400 = 2.8v - vdimm
3.57ghz -

a 970mhz overclock. you might look for the neo2 platinum or the neo2 fis2r they are better than the ls and worth every penny.
i also have an IC7 MAX 3 brand bloody new that wont overclock as high as the msi,,, why ?? who knows but im not happy about it.

hellfreeze you shoudl have gotten the IC7-G its a nice board and is basically the same as the covented MAX 3 with everything fixed.
somewhat but your hardware will determine that.

hmmm. i can still get it...my CC declined due to the $81 klipsch, so i will have to order this rig tomorrow

i could get the IC7, but my limit is $750 total. that must include shipping and all taxes.

perhaps i could take off the extra cd burner...

The extra money for the IC7 is not worth it IMHO. The AI7 is a GREAT overclocking board, and you should be very pleased with it. 🙂

The only thing I noticed ...is you're going to want 2 sticks of ram for dual channel. Otherwise you will see a significant loss in performance.

Otherwise everything looks good. 🙂

The P4 3.4E has actually gone up in price... I think it jumped about $40 in the last two weeks... Please check my figures...

INTEL!!!!!!

Arrrgh!!

Get two sticks of identical RAM
Upgrade from AI7 to IC7
Drop extraneous CDRW from system

You do realize that A64 is faster for office apps and web browsing than P4 is right?

A64 is also faster at gaming. That reminds me, where is your videocard in your sig....???

A64 also supports 64-bit OS which will follow shortly and has the potential to improve its performance even more.

A64 does general work faster such as extraction and zipping of files ... something most users encounter quite often..

A64 comes with Cool & Quiet which will save you electrical bills and it runs cooler at load than does a P4.

AND A64 3000+ is < $$$ than P4 3.0 and A64 3200+ < $$$ P4 3.2ghz and so on....

It seems you don't intend to play games, right? Then going with socket 939 now (and foregoing PCI-E on Nforce 4) will give you the longest possible CPU upgrade path anyways. Socket 775 on 915 and 925 are going to be dead since they don't support 1066FSB, so you'll have to wait for 925XE motherboards. You are also thinking about getting socket 478 mobo, in which case it is questionable how much more after P4 3.4ghz will be offered as an upgrade option.

If you are strictly going for browsing/internet usage, i'd get the dell rig since it's very cheap but get the ram for a total of 512 though.

Wow, I sure hope the person you built the rig for doesn't know that he could have saved a lot of money and gotten a better performing system....I couldn't help it =)
Good I guess, but I can't believe you let that multitasking thread lead you to get a Pentium over AMD.

alright, i'm going AMD 64. That was what i initially wanted...but strayed. anyways, i need your help now

is there really any difference between the 3000+ and 3200+, besides the $40 difference?

also, what mobo would be the best? I had previously seen this one (btw, i'm gonna be using the same RAM and HD as the P4 rig):

http://www.newegg.com/app/view...amp;manufactory=BROWSE

Would a combination of the Athlon 64, this mobo, and the Crucial RAM be a good rig? Please advise

If you are going 3.0 Prescott stay away from the 865's unless you have a spare CPU around. I went through 4 different boards in the last couple of days and they all needed a bios update to function properly. I had no other CPU so I was stuck.

Unless you get a board that's already Prescott compliant, like the P4P800-E. I've got a Northwood chip, rather than a Prescott, but theoretically it could just be popped in and should work like a charm cause the board is 100% Prescott complaint.

How do you get hired to build individual PCs? People always just ask me, and since its so simple theres no need to exchange money. I can't imagine one person paying another non professional to build a PC.
