Do I have to buy the heatsink w/ the fan or can I just buy the heatsink and attach any 80mm fan on top of it, because on Newegg.com the heatsink itself is $35 but w/ the fan is $47. I think I can get a better 80mm fan for less than $12, plus I already have a lot of 80mm fans on my case.
 
Get the HS and then put the fan you like on it. You might be able to find it cheaper than $35 also. I got one of mine from here for $29.99 but it looks like they raised their price.
 
OOps, I just ordered it from Newegg.com, and I'm not sure if it comes with grease. Can I just buy those grease at RadioShack. Would that good enough? I notice the SVC websites has a lot of good options for a good price.

radio shack thermal paste will be good enough, unless youre an obsessed overclocker, in which case you would probably want arctic silver 2.

panaflo L1A's are fans which dont push alot of air, but they are silent and actually push a lot of air relative to the noise they make. very good fans.
 
I've never seen any CPU thermal compound at Radio Shack, but I'm not a regular there - you might be better off ordering from SVC (are they still offering free shipping on Arctic Silver II?).

 
Most people recommend the Alpha PAL8045 heatsink + Panaflo L1A fan. I am seriously considering getting this combo, because I heard it's the most quietest/coolest configuration. If I decide to buy the heatsink and fan separately from 2 different places, will I need to buy anything special, such as fan clips, to mount the fan?
 
The Radio Shack thermal stuff isn't bad. I did a comparison once in my own system between that and AS2 with the same HSF. The AS2 dropped it about 3-4 degrees after 72hrs.

Anyhow, if you can wait, I'm sure svc will drop the price on the 8045 in a few weeks again.
 
I've also heard the Radio Shack stuff will eventually dry out compared to ASII, however, I've never personally used the stuff. I play it safe and use ASII.
 
The Radio shack stuff does dry out after 5-6 months, maybe sooner. But then again, if I remember right you are suppose to put new AS2 on every 3-4 months also.

Either way, AS2 is relatively cheap now(5.99) so go with that.

this depends on what you want !

An extreme hardcore overclocker's machine with an hell loud fan ? Then get an 7000rpm 80mm loud "hairdryer style" fan and mount on the PAL.

But imho the PAL's big advantage is that it allows to mount a SILENT, slow running fan on it like the one 80mm 2900rpm sunon fan they sell at newegg for a few bucks.

Since the PAL cools very good and is BIIIIG it allows you to have decent cooling with a slow/quiet fan instead of getting the same cooling with a cheaper/smaller heatsink but a much louder/faster fan to get the same result.

Btw. i have the PAL w/ that particular sunon 2900rpm "case fan" from newegg - it's quiet, i get like 40C cpu temp idle and 46C/47C temp under load...with an XP1800 running at 11.5 x 145 (1680mhz) and upped core voltage +0.050.

So I can go ahead and order that ALpha heatsink from Newegg.com and get a PAL from mpja.com and grease from Radioshack. I'm gonna be running an XP 1800+ (no OC)

But I thought the SVC website provided the heatsink + fan + grease for a good price of $46 incuding shipping, but that may not be as good as the PAL fan as u guys are talking about.

BY the way, I heard I am to install this heastink before I mount the MB to the case, right?
 
Wait! Your not gonna overclock and you want the PAL? Save your self some $$$ and get something cheaper at newegg.com. Dr Thermal is good for $20, it has quiet 70mm fan, or even the Vantec 6035 is a good all copper option.
 
I dunno if I would use the radioshack stuff... I tried some quite awhile ago (O/Cing the Celeron 300a) and the radioshack grease dried out quite quickly, becoming 'crumbly'.... You might try a local pc store and see if they have any small tubes of grease instead. AS seems to hold a better consistency for a much longer period of time.

Its just a few keystrokes in the bios (eg. upping the fsb from 133 o 145)....and if you see your memory scores like rising 60% by overclocking and tweaking your memory - why on earth shouldnt anyone want to do it ? 🙂))) But anyway..it's your decision 🙂

But..i think the PAL is also a good choice for NON overclockers...because (as said) its advantage is that you can use a really silent fan and get good cooling.

I ordered my PAL (without FAN) from svc (very good company, very fast shipping !) - but i got the sunon fan from newegg.

Yes...the fact that you have to mount thru the mainboard (with screws on the back) can be a disadvantage..but assuming that you dont replace your CPU every week i think some can live with it... (In case you had to replace your cpu this would mean you have to disassemble your whole system, remove mobo and gain access to the back of the board 😉

this is the attitude that will give you lots of trouble when OC'ing (dead parts, lost data, etc). always do a stability test for >=24hrs after raising the clock speed.

anyway, I'm all about the radio shack stuff... you get 3x the amount vs. artic silver, AND it costs less. its called "heatsnk compound" or something - just go and ask for thermal paste, the guys at the radio shack here have enough of a clue to understand 😉
 
I use Radioshack thermal compound on my current Althon TB 900 MHz for over a year. Does that mean I should open up the case and reapply thermal compound again because it evaporates? But my system seems to be running fine, I don't think I want to go through the mess.

in my experience, it turns brown/gray/black after a while, but still seems to work. if you can check the temp, and its decent, you should be fine 🙂
 
I use the 8045 and L1A fan and the loudest this in my pute is the Maxtor HD, XP1600 Non-OC and cool heatsink to touch. 🙂
 
I'm seriously considering changing out the noisy Delta 68-cfm fan that's sitting on top of my PAL8045 with something quieter. It's just too overwhelming when you can hear it from the living room......
