Not looking to anger anybody, just stating my case and hope that it is at least considered. I know other members have mentioned that they would like this kind of feature as well.

Currently having two accounts in AT forums is not allowed. There are reasons for this such as avoiding cluttering the servers with too much data and things like possible scamming in forums like buying/selling.

But Anand and many moderators have mentioned that they at least consider user's request, because it is after all our forum, we should have a say in how we want it to be run/designed.

I think the moderators do a fine job and do so out of their own time without pay, and I hate to ask something that would cause more work.

Many of my friends and family know that I use this forum for lots of my computer related information. Often when a friend/family member needs help with their computer and I don't know the answer, I ask people on here, and show them what people have replied.

The people at AT L&R (and AT forums in general) are pretty good at giving genuine advice and helping in many situations as I do for others as well. But I sometimes refrain from asking for relationship related advice on the forum because I don't like sharing all my issues with the people closest to me all the time, sometimes I just want to let off steam that if others knew they would be hurt.

The L&R section is already locked to anyone who is not a member, and this is good, but if someone was snooping they would just have to sign up. I know it's a bit paranoid, but I value my privacy.

But could something possibly be set up, specifically only for L&R, that a user can be given a second user name, or be allowed to post under the same account except that when it's in L&R forum, they be allowed to choose an option where the name shows up as "anonymous". Which ever is simplest to implement and run basically.

I could go to another forum for relationship issues, a relationship specific site even, as opposed to a technology specific site, but I relate a lot more to many of the users at AT forums. Why? Besides the fact that we all like technology, a lot of us are all like minded in a lot of other ways, and of a maturity and intellectual level that we respect. Not always the case in other types of forums.

That is my case, Thanks for hearing me out.

I would support it, but ONLY for posting a topic, NOT replying (unless replying as the topic creator). In other words, anyone other than the topic creator replying to a topic shouldn't be allowed as anonymous, that would only lead to insanity in a forum like L&R.

I disagree because it would cause to much extra work for the mods. There not paid you know.

What are you trying to hide from ?

Plenty of forums out there have a range of different subforums and no one ever has problems with it there. Let along how are you going to keep track of it? What happens if you login to the wrong username and reply or start a topic ? Then what ? I just see this being a bigger problem than it is worth for most people.

I like the idea for L&R only but it doesn't seem workable. Monitoring the names and dealing with people that started BS/Troll threads under their anon name would be a PITA.

No, as stated it's too much work. If there is something THAT embarrassing that you don't want out there then why do you want to post it on a forum anyway?

If there is no way for such a feature to be quickly/easily implemented and not require any or little ongoing effort then I'll agree it's not a big enough deal. Thanks anyways.

If you are really that concerned, you could PM one of the L&R mods to see if they will post the topic/OP anonymously for you. But then, if everyone did that, work would pile up and it would suck for them. Still, it's a technically simple solution in that it doesn't create more accounts.

I can think of a way of doing it that would not cause more moderator work, but it would take development work on the database and application.

Have 2 display names in the user table. One is your 'regular' name, one is the 'anonymous' name. When a post is made, the user would check a box to be anonymous, and that name would be displayed. All other features (like linking to a profile, postcount, pm's, etc) would be disabled automatically. Which forums the anon moniker could be used in would be set by the admin.

If a regular user viewed the thread, the anonymous name would be displayed. If a mod viewed it, the real name, with an anonymous 'flag' (or something) would be displayed.

If you are really that concerned, you could PM one of the L&R mods to see if they will post the topic/OP anonymously for you. But then, if everyone did that, work would pile up and it would suck for them. Still, it's a technically simple solution in that it doesn't create more accounts.

It doesn't have to be a mod, it could be anyone.

Well, this is true. I say a mod only because then it's not a bunch of "oh, is this really for you??" accompanied by a lot of guessing.

Would that be different if posted from an anon account? Plus, to be fair, those who have been here a while will be able to figure out who is posting what based on the post style.
