SAN FRANCISCO (Business 2.0 Magazine) - Michael Arrington at TechCrunch notes this morning that popular "quasi-legal" MP3 download service AllofMP3.com went down over the weekend, and has not yet come back up. The company operates under the dubious aegis of outfits like the "Russian Multimedia and Internet Society" which, reports MP3.com, grant it the right "to sell any song in any format without having to obtain the permission of copyright holders." Operating in a legal gray area, the site has sold music for as little as 11 cents a song, prices which have driven enormous traffic. In the U.K. it is second only to iTunes.

That's funny. The Allofmp3 Explorer (their proprietary software) still logs on. Lets see if I can download anything.

Since they steal from artists even more than RIAA member companies do, I hope they annoyed Putin somehow and get to spend a decade rotting in a Soviet prison.

Meh. If I like an artist I'll pay for a concert.

People use that as their excuse, then pay for 5 concerts while they download and keep 100 CDs from 50 artists.

Well...
5 concerts, at let's say a bargain price of $25 each.
And one $20 T-shirt
$145

100 CDs at say $14 each. $1400. How much does the artist get from that? Need at least 10.36 cents per disc to make that $145. How much do the artists actually get from CDs? Anyone know any actual numbers on this?

Since they just released allTunes recently (or at least I never knew about it), I'm guessing this wasn't expected. I'm remaining hopeful that it comes back up both because I had money in my account and I would probably turn to BT and usenet for music which really sucks.

I've never understood why, in anyones right mind, they would give a credit card number or anything financial related to a russian site.

I?m not paying till they remove the cd/portable player tax and the courts deem file sharing is illegal in Canada. Neither has happened so I won?t be using those Russian quasi legal sites.
