he's said something on the order of "descedents of slaves shouldn't pay taxes because slavery was a bad thing." i don't know anyone who'd vote for him versus the other guy.

He's been saying some weird sh*t since he got nominated.

I know nothing about him but what I saw of him on Fox News where I get most of my news, He was played a clip of him lambasting Hillery for coming from outside to run for senator of NY. He was asked to explain how he now could justify coming to Illinois and he launched into what, for my feeble brain, was a Baroque and arcane explanation filled with passion and profound sincerity, but which was totally incomprehensible to me. I felt that he had taken the expression 'If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullsh!t to new heights' because I have been suspicious ever after that I have lost the capacity to comprehend words.

Thanks, jhu, for giving me renewed hope that my brain may not yet be totally gone.

Do you think maybe he (Keyes) was being paid by how many gibberish he could spew per minutes... since the election there is a lost cause by GOP anyway. Why not have an entertainer come in and give you the performance of his life...

I think he actually has a reasonable excuse for his hipocracy it's not the excuse he states. He really has no chance of winning so this isn't an earnest attempt for public office but rather an earnest attempt to get publicity to help set him up for a future election he might actually win.

I believe what Keyes said is that he supported the concept of the following:
Reparations for DIRECT slave descendants, basically making them exempt from income tax for one generation. Apparently there was some Roman precedent for this...

I think this makes the most sense of any argument I've ever heard.

Smart man. Stupid poster.

Still how intelligence you put it, it still sounds nutty. How do u choose who is direct slave descendants, who is not? Do they have complete official record? And what is consider one generation? How long is that? And what Roman precendent you're talking about? Should we do this just on basis of precedent in old historical time?

He probably said that because of all the African-American voters in Illinois.

Are we now reduced to being bound by Roman precedent for how to conduct business in this country? Are we going to start throwing Christians to the lions, too?

How many millions of Americans are the "direct descendents" of slaves, anyway? If this idea were being promoted by a Democrat, the Republicans would be lambasting him at every opportunity. It really does sound like Keyes is shaving points in this election - either that or he's a true wacko.

the man sweats like no other. and he's so fervent in his speech its hard to really understand what the hell he's talking about sometimes. I think he was once quoted as comparing abortion to Islamic fundamentalist terrorism.

That sentiment is shared by many folks here. Get a load of the PM I once got from an ATOT regular in response to a vague comment I made about being a Democrat - I had not said ANYTHING about abortion. He's too cowardly to let me associate his name with this message.

By supporting Kerry, you support the killing of some 6 million innocent babies per year in this country. Whether you wear the uniform or not, I have no respect for someone who supports Holocaust-like murder on a yearly basis.

Yes, I am offended by you (and your Liberal buddies).

Let's see, what else do I not respect about you because you're voting for Kerry:

You're all about the grey area and blurring of right and wrong. Everything is fine as long as you feel good. You're probably first in line when a school decides it wants to eliminate sporting events because the losing team members will feel too bad afterwards.
You support the likes of Janet Reno who invaded innocent Americans, not terrorists.
You support the likes of Janet Reno who openly suggested the legalization of child porn.
You support giving every child a condom in the classroom and the removal of the 10 Commandments from every courthouse wall.
You support the removal of the right to bear arms.
You support the likes of Bill Clinton who disgraced the office.
You support the likes of Bill Clinton who gave sensitive weapons guidance technology to China in exchange for campaign contributions. (A lot of good that will do your brothers in arms.)
It pains you to hear the words, "One Nation Under God".
You don't want "marriage" as we know it be a sacred institution.

Iraq is just a small blip on the screen as far as I am concerned. It's not just Iraq. I HATE you and everyone who agrees with you because of the above, military service personnel included. There is a much larger war being waged here, and everyone is fighting on one side or the other, whether we like it or not.

OMG. What a f*ing nut. I worry for the future of this country because, sadly, I think half the people in the country think like he does. Retard.

What's odd is he is not a person with an obvious persona here (i.e., a lunatic-fringe type) - you'd never realize he was so, er, decisive in his beliefs. I feel strongly that if he were a man he'd at least have the courage of his convictions, and air his views publically so we could discuss them. He also has a burr under his saddle about homosexuals, not surprisingly.

Well being a Catholic Irishman and the son of folks who are from the old sod (actually born in the USA) on a visit... both of them.. I know that my roots are those of the slave in Ireland. A place where the Catholic was denied just about everything for centuries, including a homeland by starvation while the English government had excess foods available..
So when someone points to being owned or denied rights or any of the attributes of slavery as I see it... I look about and find folks in every corner of the world in a similar stead..
It is man's inhumanity toward man that is really the issue... and it is everywhere.
Folks say they can stand so much and can't stand no more but, all they get is more of the same... everywhere and there are folks all too willing to help continue the process.. in so many ways...

edit: Keys lambasted Clinton about moving to NY to run for the Senate then did basically the same himself...

Well you are intelligent, articulate, and reasonable so already I'm biased against you before you even open the political side of your mouth.

They got you too? I mean -- in reference to you being so partisan now Tony. I mean hey, I can't say I agree with Keyes here, but it isn't as if his idea doesn't have some historical precedence, and after all, reparations are still an issue to some. I sorely wish we didn't have to make everything so partisan in this forum. What that ATOT regular said to you is beyond nutcase to me, and kudos to you for not revealing the coward's name simply because you have integrity. Honestly though, I'm surprised you've gotten to the point of expecting what reactions there would be in case just the PARTY was reversed in the scenario about what Keyes said. This forum can't be good for us I don't guess. To be blunt: I've found it has a very negative impact on my political beliefs(i.e. I get disgusted with the entire political process).

I'm not sure what was particularly partisan about what I said - it seems clear to me that Alan Keyes is trying, in a shameless and rather embarrassing fashion, to garner black votes by suggesting what sounds like a liberal's program (the reparations). I see it as him selling out his "conservatism" for votes, the same way he sold out his "moral" opposition to carpetbagging to accept the Republican senate nomination in the first place. As I said originally, I firmly believe that if, say, Obama had proposed this, Republicans would make him a laughingstock for his efforts.

I think the reason I keep returning here is that I enjoy the debate, and it forces me to keep better-informed about the political process in the campaign season of what I regard as the most important election in many, many years. OTOH, I have recently been a little disappointed in the quality of some of my posts, as I feel as though I've been co-opted by sinking to the level of certain other posters here. There are still plenty of very bright folks here on both sides of the aisle, however, and if anything that has helped me stay optimistic and feel positive about the American democratic process.

how about we get a quote? (in full form preferably)

or is it ok to say "oh i heard so and so say something that they liek to eat babies.."

To make a statment like "Alan Keyes is trying, in a shameless and rather embarrassin fashin, to garner black votes..." is pretty big without anything to back up that assertion.

Keyes was making a Zero Offer. :)

We have no direct descendants of slaves left, most likely.

At any rate, the drain on Treasury would be miniscule at worst.

This is the way Republicans also promise reduced drug prices for the elderly. It's a little smoke with a very large mirror.

Cute though.

Dr. Keyes will be elected in my opinion. There are few politicians who are as well spoken as he.

Ever read or listen to them?

Hmm?
