I like meat as much as the next guy and I'm not a bleeding heart liberal. However, there is no need to torture an animal before you kill it. Yes, I understand they are being bred and raised to eat, and I'm not saying they need to be pampered and dressed up in little outfits while they are alive. But you'd think we as humans could have a little compassion or at least not go out of our way to hurt animals. It's disgusting.

I'm against 90% of what PETA does b/c they are so stupid about it, but this is just not right.

Has anyone in this thread actually tried to herd hogs? It's like trying to herd cats, most folk I worked with used 2X4's & cattle prods to get them to go where you want.

If you don't like the reality of animals getting killed for your food, don't watch the videos or just go vegan. I've done both, but am currently a bacon eater and a happy one at that 😀

well, for one thing, you should read Michael Bollan's "Omnivore Dilemma". In the mass "free range" farms, due to the farming conditions, animals are kept penned up (no different from "normal mass farms") when they are young to prevent exposure to some diseases .... then for only a short time frame of their life, the farm provides a tiny outdoors enclosure -- just enough to meet federal regulatations -- which the animals dont venture out due to their condition of being raised.

so buying "Free range" doesnt guarantee true free range conditions.

But that side-note said, I agree with you. I eat the hell out of meats - I *guarantee* I eat more pounds of beef per year than anyone in here. Its okay to be a carnivore and find problems with the maltreatment of animals.

We used to have a small animals farm where we'd let chickens and roosters and hens and pigs run around all day, until slaughter time.

Its a sad state the american mass food industry is in. eggs dont taste like real eggs. chickens dont taste anything. and pigs, what once were fatty and juicy and delicious, are bred and fed to be lean. damn things dont even taste right anymore!
